Barons de Rothschild Brut NV Champagne

With over 150 years of experience in the winemaking industry, the Rothschild family is simply the most famous name in wine. In 2003 they turned their attention to sparkling wine, founding Champagne Barons de Rothschild and setting out to create a brand of the highest quality. For Barons de Rothschild, this meant combining the very best terroirs with Rothschild expertise for the sole purpose of producing excellent Champagne. With industry veteran Frédéric Mairesse as Managing Director and Jean-Philippe Moulin (previously at Champagne Ruinart) as Cellar Master, the house managed to secure contracts to an impressive 72 hectares of vineyard, with 50% located in Grand Cru rated Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Premier Cru rated Vertus.

With their winery, Chateau Rothschild, and the majority of their vineyards located in the Côte des Blancs, the house-style is Chardonnay focused. To ensure the highest quality Champagne is produced the house only use the 'vin de cuvée' (the first 80% and the purest juice produced from grape pressing), use 40% reserve wines in their non-vintage blends and use a low dosage in all cuvées. They began selling their Champagne in 2009, initially targeting the Japanese market and their first vintage, Blanc de Blancs 2006, was released in 2015. Now producing over 500,000 bottles annually - an astounding number for a company with only a decade of history - the range includes a Brut, Extra Brut, Rosé, Blanc de Blancs, Vintage 2006 and even a specially created cuvée exclusively for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Group.

Champagne Barons de Rothschild Brut NV uses three to four-year old Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from only Grand Cru vineyards. The blend is an assemblage of 60% Chardonnay primarily from Grand Crus in the Côte des Blancs and 40% Pinot Noir mainly from the villages of Aÿ, Bouzy, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Verzenay. Aged for at least 3 years, Barons de Rothschild Brut NV has a high 40% reserve wine content.

Pale gold with a fine stream of bubbles, on the nose initial aromas of pear and nuttiness gives way to hints of brioche. On the palate, a linear and lively flavour of orchard fruits and hazelnuts, on the mid palate the texture is creamy and has a elegant freshness. The finish is long with light flavours of white flowers and toasty characteristics. Pairing with light dishes, scallops and shellfish will bring out the best of the Champagne.

Grape Varieties: 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir

“60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. This is also the blend currently sold as the NV Ritz champagne. Based on 2009. Currently 7g/l.
Clean, fresh, pointed and brisk. Far from opulent. ”,
Jan 2015
“(6 g/l dosage; LS30B16L1): Pale yellow. Orange zest, lemongrass, jasmine and chalky minerals on the perfumed nose, with a hint of white pepper adding lift. Juicy, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruit flavors are fleshed out by suggestions of melon and honey, putting on weight with air while maintaining vivacity. Spicy and focused on the very long, mineral-driven finish, which leaves chalky mineral and floral notes behind.”
Bought directly from Billecart-Salmon, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
