More vintages: 1988, 1996, 2002The Bollinger Champagne House has created prestigious champagnes with character, distinguished by their elegance and complexity, since 1829. The story began with Athanase de Villermont, the youngest son of a noble family. He inherited an extensive estate from his family in the A  region. He immediately foresaw the extraordinary potential of the wines of Champagne. Upon meeting Joseph Bollinger, a widely travelled German who left his country to learn about Champagne, and Paul Renaudin, a local man fascinated by the world of wine, the firm of Renaudin-Bollinger & Cie was founded on 6th February 1829. Owning 164 hectares of vineyards of which 85% are Grand Cru and Premier Cru vines, Bollinger is one of the few champagne Houses to produce the majority of their own grapes for their blends.

Madame Bollinger created the first legendary vintage in 1967 with the launch of R.D. 1952. Bollinger R.D is the result of Madame Bollinger's great vision: an expert wine with aromas enhanced by it's exceptionally long maturation in the Bollinger family cellars - more than three times longer than required. As said by JÚrome Philipon, President of Champagne Bollinger: 'Bollinger R.D. is the absolute proof that our House remains faithful to Madame Bollinger's work. It is the assumed expression of the contrast between great freshness and the development of aromas found in Champagnes with great ageing potential.' Bollinger R.D. is James Bond's favourite champagne.

The harvest was remembered for the very hot and dry summer weather which created grapes a great maturity and flavour. Flowering began between 10th and 15th June and the harvest began 84 days later on 1st September. The wines are rich and very vinous, a deep gold, with huge amounts of fruit present throughout, the finish is long and bold with toasty notes.

“Disgorged 4 May 2010. Picked from 1 Sep. Hot, dry summer, the hottest since 1959. 65% Pinot Noir. 70% from Bollinger's own vineyards. 10,359 kg yield, potential alcohol 10.5+%, initial acidity 6.7g/l, pH 3.1, final TA 4.8 g/l.
Pale bronze. Extremely rich and candified on the nose. Soft and round. Relatively low acid. Toasty, this just washes over you. Really hedonistic. In view of the relatively low acidity, it's amazing how well this has lasted. Presumably the very late disgorgement helps.”,

“Every one of my encounters with this wine has been a slight disappointment, but then again expectations fly really high for the vintage. The earlier disgorgements have had a really sweet appearing nose with candied fruit and patisserie notes. Mouth-filling, super ripe, chunky palate short of energy. It feels like its best days are already gone. From a very recent 2012 disgorged bottle if was still fully vibrant, with a peculiar combination of aged and youthful characters. Probably still recovering from the shock of such late disgorgement.”
Bought directly from Bollinger through their UK agent Mentzendorff, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
