Gosset Celebris 2004 ChampagneMore vintages: 1998, 2002Founded in 1584, Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. In 1584, Pierre Gosset, alderman of Aÿ and wine-grower, mostly red, wine from the grapes he harvested from his own vines. In the 18th century as champagne sales began to grow, the Gosset family turned to making champagne. Today, the Gosset cuvées are still presented in the antique flask identical to the one used since the 18th century. In 1994 the house was sold to the family owned Renaud-Cointreau Group, and this allowed a new level of investment to improve their vineyard management and production in the winery.
Gosset blends together the best Crus of the Marne district with Premier Cru vineyards in the villages are Avize, Chouilly, Villers-Marmery, Ambonnay, Verzenay. Once the wine has gone through its first fermentation, Gosset prevent the still wine undergoing its malolactic fermentation, which is a natural process where malic acid converts to lactic acid, the bi-product is something called diacetyl, which is the main flavour compound in butter. Most champagne houses allow their wines to undergo the ML fermentation, so the champagnes that don't tend to have fresher acidity and be more delicate and fruit driven.

The 2004 vintage was a plentiful harvest and had great maturity. August was a particularly cool month, but September was full of dry heat which accelerated the growing of the fruits.
An opulent appearance, bright pale gold with emerald green highlights. Aromas of honey and hints of caramel lead to a refreshing palate of pears, pineapple and citrus fruits. The champagne has incredible balance and is sure to improve further with a little patience.

“Pale straw green colour with a flowing, persistent small bubbled mousse. The nose is tight and contained , although with air it develops more complexity, with aromas of toasted bread, spiced lemon and quince. Although still taut, there’s a real core of mineral rich, deep flavours that promise well for long aging. Up there with the 2002 but more subtle and ready sooner. Dosage 4.5%, disgorged June 2016.
The Gosset family have been producing Champagne from the Aÿ vineyards since 1584, making them one of the oldest Champagne producers, if not THE oldest in existence today. This very small producer is run by descendants Michael and Christian Gosset who today manage around 24 acres of vineyards. Within the 24 acres are 14 acres which lie on the best hillsides of Aÿ in the Lieux-dits of Asniers, Froide Terre, Croix Courcelle and Loiselu. A further 8.5 acres are scattered across the Premier Crus of Mareuil, Dizy and Avenay. Finally a tiny half acre plot of Grand Cru Chouilly (Chardonnay) helps to create the distinctive Gosset Champagne. Since 1994 it has been owned by the Cognac house, Frapin and Jean Pierre Cointreau is currently CEO of both companies.
Gosset has some rather famous neighbours, including Bollinger whose winery is located directly opposite. However, production is much below that of the larger houses, at around 1.3 million bottles, where as Moët et Chandon are nearing 30 million.
The house has many long-standing contracts spanning generations and together, over time, both parties have developed a model of working together that produces the best possible product. With this in mind, the growers manage their vines as they see best with Gosset managing the logistics of collection and delivery to the winery, ensuring the grapes are pressed as soon as possible after harvest. All villages are delivered and processed separately with the majority of the Chardonnay coming from sites in the Côtes des Blancs.
All Gosset champagnes are 'recently disgorged', normally with a high proportion of Chardonnay and without malolactic fermentation. This preserves acidity which in turn keeps the wine fresh for much longer. The Gosset style is very creamy, dry but not acidic, full, biscuity, and yeasty. Today the wines are presented in an antique bottle, an exact replica of the one used since the eighteenth century by Champagne Gosset.
