Krug 1995 Champagne

More vintages: 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003Just five years after Joseph Krug founded the Champagne House in 1843, he documented his great vision for Krug. In his notebook, he revealed the principles of creating a champagne of great richness and yet great elegance, of selecting only the finest elements from the greatest terroirs, rejecting mediocre fruit and making both a non-vintage and a vintage cuvée (revolutionary at the time). Discovered by Olivier Krug just four years ago, the ideals in this notebook and Krug's resolute commitment to them, has secured it's position as the most luxurious and exclusive of all champagnes.

The potential for a Krug vintage wine is identified during the blending of Grande Cuvée, and only after the blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, with the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage becoming the vintage wine. The 1995 vintage provides a fascinating contrast to the 1996.

Pale straw colour, with a firm, vegetal nose and a hint of lemon cream. This is a tightly wound champagne, loaded with brioche, toasted oak, lemon rind and flowers. The mousse is extremely fine and the style decidedly more linear and fresh than the 1996. This is all on the finish, like some great white Burgundies - although medium-bodied, this appears to be built for extended cellaring.

Grape Varieties: 48% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 17% Pinot Meunier

“I am allocating slightly fewer marks here than for example to the 90, to be sure, but a more classical Krug still feels positive after the monstruous giants of 89 and 90. The most striking thing about it is the razorsharp acid that guarantees an extremely long life. Probably the most long-lived of all the 95's in Champagne. At present the acid has the same efficacy as a fantastic breeze of bracing alpine air. The complexity and elegance are unmistakeable. Most strongly reminiscent of Bollinger's fabulous 95, but somewhat harder at the present stage.”,

“Krug's 1995 Vintage continues to grow in bottle. It showed fabulous focus and definition in a vibrant, refreshing style that was perfect with hors d'oeuvres. Surprisingly, the 1995 remains one of the more under the radar recent released from Krug.”,

“A beautiful Krug, balanced to perfection. The nose is a seductive blend of toastiness, ripe sweet fruitiness, aromatic wood, apricots and perfume. Rich and oily mouth-feel with impeccably well-integrated acidic backbone. Superb now but it is still climbing toward its peak.”,

“Pale straw. Rather languid bead. Firm, almost vegetal nose with just a hint of lemon cream. Dense and tight knit. Uncompromisngly dry and still pretty tight. Very long. It's all on the finish, like some great white burgundies. Wonderfully long. But I would still ideally wait for this to unwind further. It is slowly opening out from the tense state in which it was released...”

“Light yellow. Rich and powerful, with leesy pear and white truffle aromas accented by gentle notes of white pepper and cinnamon. Extremely powerful Krug, with rich orchard fruit flavors, a velvety texture and warm, rich, inviting notes of brioche and creme brulee Finishes with intense pear and peach flavors and lingering notes of smoke, iodine and toffee. One of the most concentrated Champagnes I tried this year.”

“A very youthful '95. Delicate. Intense aromas of ginger, citrus, candied berry and multigrain bread turn to honey, roasted almonds and graphite on the palate. It's all underscored by creamy texture and a precise structure that keeps it persistent through the long finish. A picture of precision and intensity. Drink now through 2025.”
