Krug Clos Du Mesnil 2002 Champagne

More vintages: 1998, 2000, 2003Just five years after Joseph Krug founded the champagne house in 1843, he documented his great vision for Krug. In his notebook, he revealed the principles of creating a champagne of great richness and yet great elegance, of selecting only the finest elements from the greatest terroirs, rejecting mediocre fruit and making both a non-vintage and a vintage cuvée (revolutionary at the time). Discovered by Olivier Krug just four years ago, the ideals in this notebook and Krug's resolute commitment to them, has secured its position as the most luxurious and exclusive of all champagnes.

Clos du Mesnil is the most famous vineyard in all of Champagne, and one of the finest Chardonnay sites outside the Grand Crus of Burgundy itself. In the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the vines were planted and the protective wall built in 1698; based on pure chalk, the east-facing slope achieves less ripeness than some of Le Mesnil's south-facing slopes, making it all the more suited to Krug's long-ageing style. Krug purchased the plot in 1971, but not until the outstanding 1979 harvest, did Olivier's father suggest they should make a single wine; from one grape, one year, and one little garden.

The 2002 vintage in Champagne had weather conditions that were ideal for perfect grape growing. Krug Clos du Mesnil is no exception to this and has created a stunning champagne. Early signs were very promising with a mild winter and little frost, a spring that was warm and dry and a summer that was long and full of sunshine. All in all, conditions yielded a large crop with great maturity. In 2002, Chardonnay grapes benefitted from the generous heat and sunshine throughout the summer. Harvest was between 15-17 September. Only 13,278 bottles and 500 magnums of the 2002 vintage have been produced. Lebel said 2002 was one of the best Champagne vintages since 1990 and 1996. “It was a year of serenity, when everyone had a smile on their face”.

A champagne that on the nose has hints of pear and orchard fruits, the palate is full of fresh citrus fruits and hints of toasty brioche. A very long lingering finish.

Krug Clos Du Mesnil 2002 is presented in a wooden Krug gift box. Very limited quantity available due to its scarcity and popularity.

“The 2002 Clos du Mesnil is brilliant right out of the gate. Vibrant, focused and crystalline, the 2002 hits all the right notes. Lemon peel, grapefruit, slate and white flowers give the 2002 its high-toned personality. The ripeness of the vintage has softened some of the typically angular young Clos du Mesnil contours. Best of all the 2002 is a rare Clos du Mesnil that drinks well right out of the gate, even if it will surely be more complex with more time in bottle. The 2002 has been absolutely stellar on both occasions I have tasted it so far. The 2002 was vinified by Nicolas Audebert, who is now making the wines at Rauzan-Ségla and Canon.”
