Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 159 NV Champagne

Other editions: 160, 161, 162, 163, 164Just five years after Joseph Krug founded the Champagne House in 1843, he documented his great vision for Krug. In his notebook, he revealed the principles of creating a champagne of great richness and yet great elegance, of selecting only the finest elements from the greatest terroirs, rejecting mediocre fruit and making both a non-vintage and a vintage cuvée (revolutionary at the time). Discovered by Olivier Krug just four years ago, the ideals in this notebook and Krug's resolute commitment to them, has secured it's position as the most luxurious and exclusive of all champagnes.

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug's philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle and its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars; the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

Exceptional freshness in the mouth is accompanied by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat and jellied fruit. Rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit are enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone's guess. Krug Grande Cuvée is the ultimate non-vintage.

This is the 159th creation of Krug Grand Cuvée which is based on the 2003 vintage, the oldest wine is from 1988 and the youngest 2003 with 120 wines from 10 vintages to make the Krug signature Grand Cuvée. Reserve wines this year, particularly ones from 1996, as well as other truly great white wines from more recent years give spark and vitality to this year's blend. This edition was disgorged in Spring 2011 so now with more post disgorgement bottle age this Grande Cuvée is starting to show more of its potential with some of that trademark creaminess just starting to shine through.

Krug ID: 211021 - Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée NV has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App, or on the Krug website.

“This is the 159th creation of Krug Grande Cuvée, code 211021, which is based on the 2003 vintage. The oldest wine is from 1988 and the youngest 2003 with 120 wines from 10 vintages. Reserve wines this year, particularly ones from 1996, as well as other truly great white wines from more recent years, give spark and vitality to this year's blend. Disgorged spring 2011. Dosage 6 g/l. 51% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 19% Pinot Meunier.
Tasted blind. Stern and extremely intense, slightly floral, lightly spicy nose. Then it faded a little soon on the end. Just slightly less vital than the others. 2005 base?”,

“ID 313054. Magnum. Disgorged summer 2013. 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier. Based on 2006 with reserves going back to 1990. 142 different wines!
Mid straw. Intense nose demands attention. Savoury. Pretty explosive texture. Bone-dry finish. This is so different from – more complex than – most champagnes! A wine to contemplate that works towards the finish like a great burgundy, but it’s definitely not mouthwash for a big reception. Very long. 12%”,

“Beguiling complex colour of twinkling green/gold lights. Inimitably Krug, masterly blending. The Chardonnay scents are at once refined yet dripping in the aroma of crunchy Williams pears. Discreet notes of vanilla, crème pâtissière, spiced lemon and brioche. Then a mouthfeel of body and heft; great Pinot Noir that is miraculously filigreed and ethereal, plus Pinot Meunier succulence. Like no other Champagne.,

“ID 406001. The blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier was based on 2000 but includes 118 wines from 10 different vintages, the oldest being 1990, the youngest 2000. Disgorged 2006.
Fresh, floral tension. Focused thought reticent on the nose. Dense with lots to chew on. A little sweetness and lots of depth.
Drink 2010-2020”

“Light yellow-gold. Highly aromatic bouquet of fresh tangerine, candied fig, pear skin and ginger, plus a smoky mineral overtone. Tangy, precise and concentrated, offering a complex blend of citrus and orchard fruit and floral flavors underscored by chalky minerality. Juicy, tightly focused, youthfully angular Champagne, with nervy acidity adding cut to the long, sappy finish. I can see why some long-time Krug fans might be perplexed by this bottling but I think that it will be a really outstanding bottle with another five-plus years of cellaring.”
Bought directly from Moët Hennessy, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
