Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 163 NV Champagne

Other editions: 159, 160, 161, 162, 164Just five years after Joseph Krug founded the Champagne House in 1843, he documented his great vision for Krug. In his notebook, he revealed the principles of creating a champagne of great richness and yet great elegance, of selecting only the finest elements from the greatest terroirs, rejecting mediocre fruit and making both a non-vintage and a vintage cuvée (revolutionary at the time). Discovered by Olivier Krug just four years ago, the ideals in this notebook and Krug's resolute commitment to them, has secured it's position as the most luxurious and exclusive of all champagnes.

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug's philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle and its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars; the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

Exceptional freshness in the mouth is accompanied by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat and jellied fruit. Rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit are enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone's guess. Krug Grande Cuvée is the ultimate non-vintage.

This is the first bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée that is displaying the edition on the label, a pattern that Krug have now adopted to show that base vintage of each Grande Cuvée. This is the 163rd creation of Krug Grand Cuvee which is based on the 2007 vintage, the oldest wine is from 1990 and the youngest 2007 with 183 wines from 12 vintages to make the Krug signature Grande Cuvée. In this early harvest year aromas were more impressive than taste. Thus the reserve wines lend the complexity, roundness, body and length which were missing. This edition was disgorged in Summer 2015 so now with more post disgorgement bottle age this Grande Cuvée is starting to show more of its potential with some of that trademark creaminess just starting to shine through.

Krug ID: 315051 - Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée NV has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App, or on the Krug website.

“The is the 163rd creation of Krug Grande Cuvée, code 315051, which is based on the 2007 vintage. The oldest wine is from 1990 and the youngest 2007 with 183 wines from 12 vintages. In this early-harvest year aromas were more impressive than taste. Thus the reserve wines lend the complexity, roundness, body and length which were missing. 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 6 g/l. Disgorged spring 2014.
Tasted blind. Mellow nose. Savoury and almost meat and two vegy. Very firm. Marked acidity. Throat-warming finish. Very fine peacock’s tail finish. Edgy and youthful and very good. A second taste suggests it falls away a little. And it’s a tad dry on the end. Could this be based on 2006?”

“12% alcohol. Disgorged summer 2014, oldest wine 1990, base wine 2007, seven years on lees, 12 different vintages. Complex and intense; lemony, appley and herby. Lots of flavour here with bracing freshness and notes of toast, citrus pith, grapefruit and herbs. There’s a sweet toffee and toast note adding richness, but the core of this wine is linear, intense, citrussy fruit. Still quite primary, this will blossom into all out toasty richness with a bit of time in bottle. Very tight now, and tighter than I’d expect from Krug. ”

“This mouthwatering Champagne shows a lovely sense of finesse, with firm acidity deftly married to a rich profile of crème de cassis, toasted brioche and lime blossom, accented by hints of café au lait, singed orange peel and exotic spice. Long and plush on the finish. Disgorged 2014. Drink now through 2024. ”

“Beguiling complex colour of twinkling green/gold lights. Inimitably Krug, masterly blending. The Chardonnay scents are at once refined yet dripping in the aroma of crunchy Williams pears. Discreet notes of vanilla, crème pâtissière, spiced lemon and brioche. Then a mouthfeel of body and heft; great Pinot Noir that is miraculously filigreed and ethereal, plus Pinot Meunier succulence. Like no other Champagne.”
