Lanson Noble Cuvée Blanc de Blancs 2002 Champagne

Lanson, established in 1760 has been creating Champagne using the traditional wine-making method without malolactic fermentation with the majority of the grapes in their blends from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards. Hervé Dantan, Winemaker at Lanson since 2013, learnt all Lanson's production secrets and philosophy of the house from Jean-Paul Gandon, his predecessor at the helm for 30 years previously. First created in 1979, Lanson Noble Cuvée is Lanson's prestige cuvée produced from selected grapes from Grand Cru rated vineyards.

The 2002 vintage shaped up perfectly over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods, interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The acidity levels and potential alcohol in the grapes was excellent, very similar to the levels seen in the exceptional 1996 vintage. The harvest was considered great by many producers and Lanson Noble Cuvée Blanc de Blancs is great expression of the harvest with Chardonnay grapes excelling.

A vibrant yellow golden hue with a fine stream of bubbles. On the nose initial fruits of citrus and subtle lime, on the palate the initial tight acidity opens to a bold toasty mid-palate with abundance of orchard fruits. Very complex already and sure to develop further given some more ageing.

“Bright and clear with a gentle effervescence of fine bubbles. The nose shows attractive almond, lemon and floral notes. The palate is crispy dry and elegant with granny smith apples, medium toasty notes and good minerality.”,

“Disgorged June 2015. RS 6 g/l. Supplied by Lanson UK.
Tasted blind. Great energy. Real interest on the nose and pretty high acid still on the palate (which should have led me to Lanson). A little astringent on the end. Slightly loose textured. And not that long. But it improved in the glass. According to The Finest Bubble’s scorekeeper, I gave this wine 18 but I was too busy to keep a record of it on my laptop.”,

“Tight, sulphuric smoky-mineral nose with tropical fruit underneath. Firm, zesty, well focused palate with long succulent length with a hefty yet balanced dosage. Highly youthful still. Hopefully the reductive sulphuric note will settle.”
