Laurent-Perrier Rosé NV Champagne

The house was set up by Eugene Laurent in Tours-Sur-Marne, and after marrying Mathilde-Emilie Perrier, the company name was born. Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, a member of another great Champagne family, Lanson, acquired the house in 1938 after the owners died. In 1948 her son, Bernard, who had spent much of the Second World War fighting in the Resistance, took over the business and began the process of rebuilding it after the war. When Bernard de Nonancourt launched Cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier in 1968, he decided to present his creation in a uniquely distinctive bottle to magnify this very special cuvée; curvaceous lines, unique, an invitation to self-indulgence!

The Pinot Noir grapes are de-stemmed and hand sorted and the berries are then macerated for 12-72 hours, depending on fruit ripeness, until the colour is fixed and the aroma resembles freshly picked raspberries. The timing is so crucial, legend has it that the first Chef de Cave, Edouard Leclerc, slept by the tank to stop it just in time! Some years, a portion of the juice is drawn off during the first 24 hours using the "saignée method" to further concentrate colour. The final blend is predominantly one vintage with a small amount of reserve wines, matured in bottle on the lees for four years before discouragement and LP believe in then bringing it quickly to market after a three month rest.

Subtle, forthright, and very fresh on the nose; cuvée Rosé Laurent-Perrier suggests a basketful of small berry fruits: strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, redcurrants, and morello and black cherries. The overwhelming sensation is one of freshness and the taste is like breathing the heady aromas of a freshly-picked basket of berry fruits - a symphony of aromas with a gently-rounded, tender finish. The result is outstanding; lovely darker red fruits dominate this easy to drink rosé, no wonder it has so many fans. If you can manage not to drink it and can store it in a cool place then cellar it for several years, it will reward your patience.

“Beautiful deep orange and copper toned colour. Evolved, soft, toasty nose with depth. Ripe cherry fruit, gentle spiciness. Quite winey, clean fruit and evolved style. Velvety texture and really harmonious character. A consistently great effort with the maceration method. Always a delight. I have also grown to be a great fan of the magnum, which ages in a grand fashion developing great winey qualities and Burgundian notions.”

“Light, simple red fruit, perky and tart. Precious little flavour development on the palate though. (RH)”

“100% Pinot Noir. Some sulphur on the nose but the fruit is pure and plump on the palate. Little discernible autolysis but lovely floral character. (RH)”

“Vivid orange-pink. An expressive, spice-accented bouquet evokes fresh raspberry, orange pith, white flowers and ginger, with a hint of rhubarb adding an earthy flourish. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering intense red fruit and bitter citrus flavors underscored by chalky mineral and white pepper notes. Rich yet lively rosé with excellent closing thrust and floral persistence.”

“Bright orange-pink. Toasty strawberry and raspberry aromas are accented by iodine, floral oils and dusty minerals. Broad and supple in texture, with sappy red berry and blood orange flavors supported by a firm spine of minerality. Finishes spicy, silky and long, with a late rose pastille note adding an exotic twist.”

“Elegant and fruity at the same time with a quick invitation from bright, pure cherryish notes and then filled out handsomely by whiffs of chalky soils and well-integrated, rich and uplifting yeast-driven scents, this wine manages to be both vigorous and layered at one and the same time. Its bubbles are insistent, finely carved and add to the early sensations of lightness and energy yet also carry the wine long into a balanced, refined finish. And its latter palate grip is exactly what one should expect from the genre. While service with light foods would be our first choice, this one has the beauty to stand alone.”

“Shows fine balance, with a vibrant tanginess to the flavors of black currant, strawberry, licorice and candied ginger. Features a fine, creamy bead, revealing a lasting note of smoky mineral on the finish. Drink now through 2018. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.”

“Very pretty pale salmon. Extremely, exuberantly fruity (as opposed to fine). This comes in the smartest conceivable pink box. Dead classy. Suggestions of strawberries. Nice level of fizz but not one of the most sophisticated pink champagnes in my view.”

“Restrained on the nose, and the palate. Not the best bottle of this I've had, there doesn't seem much to it, although the texture and balance is lovely, the flavours are a bit awol. ”
