Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV Champagne

Louis Roederer, the largest independent, family-managed champagne maker is the fortunate proprietor to 235 hectares of sublimely located vineyards, supplying 70% of its needs for an annual production of 3 million bottles. Uniquely, after 10 years of experimentation, they are beginning to witness the benefits of a biodynamically managed vineyard. Chef de Cave, Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon is particular about Louis Roederer's craft; "We don't blend, we combine," he says. "I love art, and like a great painter we add colour rather than blending."

Brut Premier is a culmination of wine from eight different harvests, utilizing all three Champagne grape varieties from more than 40 different plots. The percentage of Louis Roederer reserve wines (matured in oak casks for two to 10 years) included in Brut Premier varies from 10 to 33 percent. Five percent of the wines used in Brut Premier are matured in oak casks and the final blend is matured for three years in the cellar and rested for six months after disgorgement to perfect maturity.

As a consequence of its blend containing eight different vintages, Brut Premier is the embodiment of the Louis Roederer style, merging all the fruitiness and freshness of youth with the vinosity of a fully mature wine. Fine bubbles and a nose of fresh fruit and hawthorn. The inclusion of reserve wines gives it the complexity and roundness characteristic of Louis Roederer champagnes. Smooth, complex palate mingling flavours of apple and pear with blackberries, raspberries and cherries. This is a structured and elegantly mature wine, lively on the mouth with a smooth palate.

The Jeroboam and larger bottle sizes all come in Louis Roederer branded wooden boxes.

Grape Varieties: 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier

“Soft, subdued white fruit character with a classy charred toasty nose underneath. Lovely mineral touch. Zesty, seamlessly intertwined lean and compact palate of lovely acid line. Delicate and silky with the softest mousse. Always benefits from post-disgorgement ageing. The most elegant of the Grand Marque non-vintages. 10 year-old bottles can be stunning but already 1-2 years makes miracles.”

“The NV Brut Premier is bold, powerful and intense. Hazelnut, smoke, dried pear, mint and savory herbs are all pushed forward. In this release, the Brut Premier is a bit brash and unpolished, with less of its typical finesse. Let's just say I was not surprised to scan the back label and learn that this release is based on the 2011 vintage. Even Roederer could not overcome the significant challenges presented by the 2011 vintage.”

“A vivacious Champagne, finely knit and elegant overall. This is creamy and satiny in texture, with layers of yellow plum, chalk, toast, glazed apricot and lemon curd. Offers a lingering, smoke- tinged finish. Drink now through 2020.”

“This is a particularly good bottling of Brut Premier. Drawing on Roederer’s famed reserve wines, it has a touch of toast that adds a round character to well as fresh, vivid lemon and grapefruit flavors. Drink this delicious, rich wine now.”

“A smoky note of minerality complements the flavors of dried cherry and black currant, almond financier and gumdrop in this refined, creamy version. The delicate yet persistent acidity is well-integrated, leading to a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2018”

“Roederer is one of my go-to champagne. It was a real pleasure to drink - not taste- a glass of the NV Brut Premier to start off this delicious lunch. The mushroom soup was perfect and a great match to the warm, nutty nuances of the Champagne. Sometimes simple is best, and that was certainly the case here.”

“Nutty nose. Some great savour. Bone dry and serious. Though not concentrated enough for a very long life.”

“The true star of Roederer, and by far the cheapest, this is quintessential winter champagne. Three-fifths pinots, some old oak maturation and bottle aged for three years add honeyed richness, butterscotch, brioche and cinnamon, finessed with a cut of lemon.”
