Louis Roederer Cristal 2006 Champagne

More vintages: 1996, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2009Louis Roederer, the largest independent, family-managed champagne maker is the fortunate proprietor to 235 hectares of sublimely located vineyards. In 1876, Russia's Tsar Alexander II - a lover of Louis Roederer wines - asked the producer to create a special cuvée for his personal use which was unique, in both its style and bottle design. So Louis Roederer offered him an exceptional crystal bottle, containing the fruit of vines selected from the seven great crus on his estate. This cuvée would be offered in only the truly 'great' years in which the ripeness of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes could provide the subtle, precise balance that have now become the distinction of the leading prestige cuvée of Champagne.

Cristal is a blend of Grand Crus from the Reims mountain, the warm 2006 summer led to a long dry September hastening the ripening process producing the distinctive, rich, complex grapes. Twenty percent of the wines blended are vinified in oak barrels and the final product is matured for 5 years in cellars and rests for 8 months after disgorging.

This champagne has a rich colour with light amber highlights, characteristic of 2006; a year of very fine ripeness. There is a rich bouquet with citrus fruits such as lemon and orange and a few hints of tatin tart and Danish pastries add a final touch to the already complex range of aromas. The texture is incredibly concentrated, giving the impression of biting into a ripe, fleshy fruit. The palate is enveloped by this depth of juicy, silky fruit, which soon makes way for a pure, sharp, graceful freshness.

Grape Varieties: 55% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay
Dosage: 9 g/L
Disgorged: 2014

“60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay.
Complex but very youthful nose. So tight and coiled. Still so tight it’s almost metallic on the finish. What a shame it is that people are drinking this already. There is massive density here but not – yet – that much flavour and development. Lots going on in the finish. Very long. Wait!!!! 12%”

“Lovely broad nose with buttered toast and popcorn and creamy baked apple fruit. Long, dense finish – lifted yet concentrated with some lovely bitter umami character too. More open than previous vintages but undoubtedly ageworthy too. ”

“Broad, ample and resonant on the palate, the 2006 Cristal dazzles with its pure richness and volume. Readers need to give the 2006 another 4-5 years in bottle, perhaps longer, as the wine appears to be shutting down a bit. Tasted next to the 2002, today the 2006 is a bit less opulent but just as intense, layered and deep. This is a fabulous showing.”

“2006 was a very warm year, characterised by contrasting rainfall patterns. Following on from an unusually cold and rainy August, a warm, dry September hastened up the ripening process producing distinctive, rich, complex grapes. Disgorged January 2013.
Current vintage. Quite rich, powerful nose. Intense and powerful Still very high in acidity. Tightly wound. I'd almost decant this! Throbs with future possibility. Great potential but not yet reality.”

“Although it is still young, this vintage of Cristal promises great things. There’s an impressive balance between ripe fruit and crisp acidity, rich and food friendly, but also a fine apéritif. Apricot and grape- fruit flavors are round and rich, but with considerable minerality as well”

“This elegant version shows beautiful texture and a sense of finesse despite the underlying power of vibrant acidity and smoky minerality. The palate offers a finely layered mesh of blackberry, poached pear, almond pastry, lemon zest and pickled ginger flavors”

“The 2006 Cristal is one of the most towering, structured young Cristals I can remember tasting. Roederer is among the first, if not the first, major house to release its tete de cuvees. Young Cristal can often deceive with its open, seductive personality, but that is not at all the case here. The 2006 is majestic, powerful Cristal that is going to need bottle age. Today it is massive, tightly coiled and imposing, with tons of structure, phenomenal balance and plenty of potential for the future.”
