Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2006 Champagne

More vintages: 1990, 2002, 2004, 2008Champagne's geographical location engenders capricious weather. For this reason, since their foundation in 1849 Pol Roger have observed the tradition of not releasing a vintage-dated champagne unless the climatic conditions permit the production of grapes of outstanding ripeness. A Vintage champagne must, above all else, be a balanced champagne. This balance depends on the right blend of healthy grapes, a good potential alcohol and correct acidity. The first criterion for declaring a vintage wine is its capacity to age. Devotees who have the patience to age their champagnes are rewarded with a more complex and richer wine.

Throughout the spring of 2006, the weather was dry however, the next two months experienced heavy rainfall. Development of the vines was promising without any sprint frost. Beginning in June, the summer provided optimal conditions for flowering. August was cold and humid, however, September was full of sunshine and warmth which encouraged an exceptional development of the bunches and the grapes were very healthy at the time of the harvest. The earliest parcels were picked on 6th September and the latest on 25th September. Produced only in limited quantities using the traditional house blend from 20 Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, Brut Vintage 2006 is aged for 9 years in the cellars before being disgorged and released. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars some 33 metres below ground level where it's 9°C, some 2-3°C below the temperature of other Champagne cellars. The cooler cellars slow down the bottle fermentation which ultimately produces a Champagne with finer bubbles for which these small production releases of Pol Roger are known for.

The 2006 vintage on the nose shows expressions of apple and dried fruits. The well-balanced structure on the palate boasts sumptuous almond nuttiness balanced with citrus freshness.

Grape varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay

“Dense, tightly laced on the nose with real appeal. Some richness on the palate. Very flattering and spreads right across the palate. Fresh and clean. Lingering finish”
Aug 2016
“The 2006 Brut Vintage is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need time to fully unwind. A host of apricot pit, chamomile, orange blossom and smoke notes fill out the wine's ample frame effortlessly, but it is the wine's pure weight that stands out most at this stage. The ripeness of the year comes through as the wine continues to flesh out in the glass, but the 2006 is best cellared for at least a few years.”

“A big wine for Pol Roger vintage. Lots of Pinot opulence and depth coming with a tropical twist and spicy tones. Generous palate and velvety smoothness. Long, muscular, fruity finish. A keeper!”

“If Bollinger’s Grande Année 2006 has an autumnal grandeur, the Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2006 is pure springtime: green, sappy, leafy, with just a whisper of bread, powder and talc to sweeten it. This is a Pinot-rich blend in which all overt ‘Pinotness’ has been transmuted into a light, chalky essence and a stony sappiness. Long, searching, deliciously tense — yet ripe, not raw: another superb steel-schooled effort. ”

show review
“The 2006 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking now, as the flavors are just beginning to show the first signs of development. Peach, apricot, brioche, mint and sweet white flowers open up in a gracious, complex Champagne that is super-expressive today. The weight of Pinot Noir comes through beautifully in the 2006, a resonant and inviting Champagne that hits all the right notes.”
Bought directly from Pol Roger, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
