Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2008 Champagne

More vintages: 1990, 2002, 2004, 2006Champagne's geographical location engenders capricious weather. For this reason, since their foundation in 1849 Pol Roger have observed the tradition of not releasing a vintage-dated champagne unless the climatic conditions permit the production of grapes of outstanding ripeness. A Vintage champagne must, above all else, be a balanced champagne. This balance depends on the right blend of healthy grapes, a good potential alcohol and correct acidity. The first criterion for declaring a vintage wine is its capacity to age. Devotees who have the patience to age their champagnes are rewarded with a more complex and richer wine.

Produced only in limited quantities using the traditional house blend from 20 Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Cte des Blancs, Brut Vintage 2008 is aged for 9 years in the cellars before being disgorged and released. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars some 33 metres below ground level where it's 9C, some 2-3C below the temperature of other Champagne cellars. The cooler cellars slow down the bottle fermentation which ultimately produces a Champagne with finer bubbles for which these small production releases of Pol Roger are known for.

After some frosty conditions at the end of December, the start of the year was relatively humid and mild with spells of sun. As the year went on the weather would begin to improve, but only after a rainy spell in March and April. May was the turning point as the sun began to shine and the heat intensified. During the summer months, variable weather of very hot spells combined with stormy patches in July and the start of August, September was excellent for the grapes and this was sustained all through to picking. Incredible grapes were produced with amazing acidity and balance.

On the nose 2008 vintage is focused with hints of spice. On the palate, slight toasted notes give way to a rounded depth of delicious fruits with perfect acidity, a delight. A long finish of apples and a lovely creamy texture. A vintage that has been compared to the exceptional 2002, given time this will be even more rewarding on the palate.
