Pol Roger Rosé 2008 Champagne

Champagne's geographical location engenders capricious weather. For this reason, since their foundation in 1849 Pol Roger have observed the tradition of not releasing a vintage-dated champagne unless the climatic conditions permit the production of grapes of outstanding ripeness. A vintage champagne must, above all else, be a balanced champagne. This balance depends on the right blend of healthy grapes, a good potential alcohol and correct acidity. The first criterion for declaring a vintage wine is its capacity to age. Devotees who have the patience to age their champagnes are rewarded with a more complex and richer wine.

During the late months of 2007 and early 2008, the weather was mild and humid at times. The development of the vines was good and the spring months of March and April were cool and rainy, during which there were spells of frosts and snow. The vines has vastly different conditions in May from those previously, as a hot temperatures and dry conditions boosted growth. During the summer the weather was variable, with storms in July and limited sunny periods in August. However, conditions in the vineyard were outstanding leading to near perfect conditions prior to harvest on 15th September.
In order to obtain its delicate colour and subtle nose 15% Pinot Noir, from selected vineyards in Bouzy, Ambonnay and Cumieres, is fermented and added to the blend prior to the second fermentation. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars 33 metres below ground level where it's 9°C, some 2-3°C below the temperature of other Champagne cellars. The cooler cellars slow down the bottle fermentation which ultimately produces a Champagne with finer bubbles for which these small production releases of Pol Roger are known for.

A bright pink colour that has a stream of fine bubbles. On the nose aromas of raspberry and redcurrant that continues on the palate bursting with red fruits and hints of citrus. A fine balance and structure persist long through the finish. A vintage that is already showing great promise although still very youthful.

Pol Roger Rosé
Aug 2016
“The 2008 Rosé is absolutely gorgeous. Precise, sculpted and lifted throughout, the 2008 offers striking brightness in its red berry and rose petal flavors. The wine gains energy, intensity and focus with time in the glass, yet the overall impression is one of finesse. Readers should expect a taut, chiseled style. Then again, that is 2008.”

“Still youthful and a bit reserved nose with sweet cherry-toned fruitiness coming with a promising spicy undertone. Gentle biscuity and toasty complexity. Fine, nervy palate with length and opulent fruitiness. A great, elegant rosé vintage for Pol.”
