Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 1998 Champagne

More vintages: 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004Churchill's relationship with Pol Roger dates back to 1945 when, during a luncheon given by the British ambassador to France after the liberation of Paris, Churchill met the charming and captivating Odette Pol-Roger and began a friendship, indulged by his wife Clementine, which lasted until Sir Winston's death in 1965. Each year on his birthday, Odette would send him a case of vintage champagne. So close was his relationship with the family that, on Churchill's death, Pol Roger put black-bordered labels on the bottles destined for the UK. In 1975, Pol Roger went one step further and named their prestige cuvée after him, making it in the robust, mature style that he liked so much.

Composed exclusively from grapes from grand cru pinot noir and chardonnay vineyards which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, it is only ever made in the very best vintages. The 1998 vintage shows all the hallmarks of a truly outstanding year. The features of the vintage were a high natural sugar content in the grapes and an excellent level of acidity, indicating an exceptional overall balance and long ageing potential. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars some 33 metres below ground level where it's 9°C, some 2-3°C below the temperature of other Champagne cellars. The cooler cellars slow down the bottle fermentation which ultimately produces a Champagne with finer bubbles for which Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is renowned.

A rich golden colour, this 1998 has a delicate mousse of tiny bubbles accompanied by scents of hawthorn and hazelnut. In the mouth, it displays a fine balance between fresh acidity and full-bodied wine. Truly a champagne of incredible depth and flavours that linger long on the palate - now at 17 years old, Sir Winston Churchill 1998 is still incredibly young and the magnums even more so. We are down to the last five magnums.

“Even better the day after opening. Deep gold. Baked apple nose. Very dense, a wine that could stand up to a wide range of foods, including magret de canard. Dry finish after a very rich start but quite enough acidity. Great depth. This just shows how good the bottle size of this wine could have been at the recent bottle v magnum tasting - except that the bottle was not in great condition. ”

“(Magnum) Tasted blind. Disgorged July 2007. Bought direct from Pol Roger.
Deep greenish gold. Putty, complete nose. Just the right side of over-mature. Solid and just fresh enough – a sort of elephant on a tightrope. Powerful finish. Magnum? Yes. ”

“(Bottle) Tasted blind. Disgorged summer 2007. Bought on the secondary market.
Very deep straw gold. The biggest difference in colour. Much less fizzy than the other sample (which turned out to be the magnum). Almost oxidised nose. Losing it. Not fresh enough for me, although it scored quite highly with the crowd. I thought it had to be the bottle and it was. ”

“Light golden colour. Complex nose combining dried fruit, grilled almond, creamy notes. The palate is both ethereal and opulent and shows superb clean aromas. It is sustained by a touch of liveliness which gives it great persistence. Superb.”

“Fine top note of refreshment and then great depth underneath. Very tight fine bead. Dry end. Great breadth. Herrumph of a broad Churchill chest. Bravo! Long.”

“The 1998 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens with intriguing, exotic notes of smoke, cured meats and tar. This is a big, sweeping Sir Winston Churchill endowed with layers of perfumed ripe pears, quince, flowers and spices in a style that balances a generous expression of fruit with acidity and minerality. Everything is in the right place in this delicate yet deeply satisfying Champagne. This bottle was disgorged at the beginning of 2007. Winston Churchill is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with Pinot playing the leading role.”

“Even at 10 years, this is still just setting out. While it doesn’t have the immensity of the 1996, it has a great intense grapefruit, pear and fresh apricot series of flavors that come through with toast, ripeness and a suggestion of almonds. 7–8 years aging.”

“Light gold. Intensely aromatic nose offers a complex bouquet of smoky orchard and pit fruit aromas, along with exotic orange zest and white pepper. Deep and chewy, displaying impressively concentrated but brisk pear and bitter citrus pith flavors and an undercurrent of buttery brioche and lees. Finishes with palate-staining persistence and a subtle anise quality. As usual, a stunner. ”
