Pommery Cuvée Louise 2002 Champagne

'I resolved to continue with the business and take over for my husband... ' Madame Pommery set out to change the way business was run, she had no care for acting against the usual rules and decided to create a successful brand image of Pommery that remains today. In 1874, Pommery created the first vintage brut in the history of Champagne, Pommery Nature 1874. Madame Pommery had two words to describe her Champagne: cheerful lightness. Current Pommery Cellar Director, Thierry Gasco continues to promote the original philosophy that has created a worldwide name in Champagne. Pommery Champagne is stored 30m deep in a series of 120 ancient Roman chalk pits.

Champagne Pommery produced Cuvée Louise for the first time in 1979 in an expression of Madame Pommery's personality and vision. A champagne with very low sugar content to reflect the origins of the Brut Nature 1874. Three of the plots that Cuvée Louise is harvested from are Chardonnay from Avize and Cramant and Pinot Noir from Ay, all three are Grand Crus. Cellar Director Thierry Gasco commented "Cuvée Louise aims to strike the perfect balance between the year and the style." Cuvée Louise 2002 is aged on the lees for over 8 years.

A vintage full of perfect conditions and amazing maturity of grapes, 2002 had a moderately dry spring with little frost. Late spring brought a few showers but nothing to disrupt growth of the buds, a summer of hot and dry conditions helped form vines bursting with fruit. The maturity of the grapes was unprecedented and the wines have developed exceptionally.

A vibrant hue of yellow with slight hints of green colours. On the nose aromatic hints of lemon and grapefruit, leading to citrus fruits and berries on the palate. This fruity flavour continues long through the finish.

Grape Varieties: 60% Chardonnay 40% Pinot Noir

“The nose is elegant but fairly closed with hints of earth. The palate is fresh, dry and polished. A champagne that is structured and refined.”

“Disgorged 13 September 2013. RS 5 g/l. 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. From EU stock of Pommery's European agent.
Tasted blind. Mid straw. Tense and tight with a long way to go. Lychees and lots of fruit. Refined. Really long and reverberant. Lifted. Quite a revelation.”

“Creamy, yoghurt, dairy - almost oaky? Then a dry, fibrous, lengthy finish. Loads of power and density. (RH)”

“This well-aged wine from a top Champagne vintage is just now ready to drink after 12 years. It has a touch of toast, but it's the rich, complex texture and fine structure that set it apart. It's not a dry wine, it feels soft. It is so well integrated, elegant with hints of apples, a layer of minerality and still-fresh final acidity.”
