Taittinger Brut Vintage 2009 Champagne

More vintages: 2002, 2006, 2008"To my grandson, who will one day be an entrepreneur and be the guardian of the family tradition." Little did the author know how true this prophecy of Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger would prove to be - it was a gutsy move buying back the family business in 2008 - but one that has truly paid off. One of the last big independent, family-owned houses that uphold the name not only on the label, but in their management; Pierre-Emmanuel remains President, whilst his son, Clovis, is Export Director, and his daughter, Vitalie, handles the company's artistic vision. Comtes de Champagne is the pinnacle of Taittinger's range offering finesse, elegance and layers of complexity.

As quality is of paramount importance, Taittinger only uses grapes from the finest vineyards in Champagne. Ranking in the top two major Champagne houses who self supply all of their grapes, by owning some 288 hectares of vineyards in the best localities. This ensures a regular supply of approximately 50% of Taittinger's annual needs, significantly more than other well known Champagne houses. The remaining 50% come from carefully selected growers, some of whom have links going back four generations or more. Taittinger Brut Millésimé 2009 is a blend of grape exclusively from the first pressing and is aged for 4 years. It consists of Chardonnay from the 'Grand Crus' of the Cöte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from the 'Grand Crus' of the Montagne de Reims and the start of the Vallée de la Marne.

2009 began with a harsh winter, characterised by severe frosts and frequent snow. Milder weather arrived in April and saved the vine from spring frosts. A capricious weather characterised by storms, rain and low temperatures lasted until Summer and a dry sunny and hot month of August provided ideal conditions for the grapes to ripen and be in good health.

The champagne is a pale yellow but has a constant fine stream of bubbles. Initially on the nose there are yeasty bread aromas that give way to a sweeter fruity scent. On the palate, hints of lemon and mandarin are present that leads to a slighty honeyed mid-palate. The finish is exceptionally long and generous with abundance of more fresh and rich fruits. A vintage that is ready to drink but given some time the maturity will only add to the flavours.

“Good strong stream of bubbles. Initially on the nose you get lots of fresh apple and hints of baking bread and that creamy custard and french pastries that all come out more as you taste. There is a lovely freshness and delicacy to the mouthfeel, with ripe cooked apple richness and tantalising glimpses of that bricohe character. Good balance of acidity and roundness.”

“Lovely yeast-complexed gunpowdery nose with lemon curd, meringue, white flowers. Superb acidity expressed as vitality and drive. Smooth and caressing but at the same time invigorating and energizing. Very youthful still shortly after release with potential.”
