Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé 2006 Champagne

"To my grandson, who will one day be an entrepreneur and be the guardian of the family tradition." Little did the author know how true this prophecy of Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger would prove to be - it was a gutsy move buying back the family business in 2008 - but one that has truly paid off. One of the last big independent, family-owned houses that uphold the name not only on the label, but in their management; Pierre-Emmanuel remains President, whilst his son, Clovis, is Export Director, and his daughter, Vitalie, handles the company's artistic vision. Comtes de Champagne is the pinnacle of Taittinger's range offering finesse, elegance and layers of complexity.

All the grapes used in Comtes de Champagne are grown in the 100% rated Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs of Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Chouilly. Only made from Chardonnay and from vintages of exceptional quality, 5% of the wines have aged for 4 months in new oak barrels, a third of which are renewed every year. Presented in 18th century antique style bottles, this hand-crafted Champagne is aged 18 metres underground in the UNESCO status Saint Nicaise cellars in Reims, for a minimum of 8 years before being released.

The 2006 vintage was a markedly hot year. Fortunately, after a cold and snowy winter, there was no damage in the vineyard and the spring levelled things out with steady, mild weather patterns. A variable and unpredictable summer brought periods of extreme heat punctuated by storms in July, but cooler temperatures in August led to an unaffected harvest. The more we taste expressions of the 2006 vintage, the more we are coming to view it as one of the best; second only to 2002, it is surely one of the vintages of the decade.

The Comtes de Champagne Rosé 2006 is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay all from Grand Crus. From the village of Bouzy originates the Pinot Noir grapes and the Chardonnay from Côte des Blancs.

On the nose, this wine has bursts of strawberries, morello cherries and blackcurrants. On the palate, expressive with more blackcurrant and a hint of pear. The mid-palate contains a tannin tartness that leads to a magnificent finish that lingers. Ideal for deserts of fruits.

Notably, Loic Dupont, head winemaker at Taittinger commented: "I think the recently released 2006 vintage is possibly the closest stylistic comparison to emerge since the 2002."

Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir 70%, Chardonnay 30%

“An attractive bouquet of rich citrus and strawberry jam fruits with a hint of gingerbread spiciness. The palate is rich and round with some sweetness infused with delicate spice, chalky minerality and a vibrant, zesty finish.”

“70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay.
Pale salmon pink. Floral, if very light, nose. Off dry with a lightly bitter finish. More than a hint of cough medicine about this – in a nice way! For food – but ready to drink at the table. 12.5%”

“In this vintage, the weight of the Pinot is especially evident. Highly perfumed, expressive aromatics find a gorgeous counterpoint in the vivid, chiseled flavors, while the huge, resonant finish leaves a lasting impression. The 2006 Comtes Rosé is a fabulous Champagne to follow over the next two decades-plus.”
