Taittinger Brut Vintage 2013
Taittinger produce a vintage champagne only when the harvest has been of exceptional quality. Their Brut Vintage is always a blend of juice exclusively from the first pressing of the grapes and is aged for four years in the cellars, allowing the aromas to mature slowly and the length and complexity of the wine to develop. It consists of Chardonnay from Grand Crus of the Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from Grand Crus of the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne.
Maturity at harvest was very good, the Chardonnays combined notes of white flowers with citrus and hints of tropical fruits from the later September sunshine. They were powerful, structured and well-rounded with excellent length. The Pinots Noir grapes had good complexity with floral aromas of some yellow as well as the typical red fruit characters.

“Bright lemon yellow colour. Upon release the wine was reserved, not expressing much apart from very clean fruitiness of the primary kind. Lemon, pear drops, honey but mostly still smoky and mineral tones. On the light-weight and elegant palate there is silky texture and appetising tension to it. Lean, crisp and long with lots of promise but still not communicating all it has got. ”

Last few tickets available for The Finest Bubble Tasting: Bottle vs Magnum - 28/09/2023
@nickbaker.tfb will be showing how well magnums – in comparison to bottles – retain all their freshness, lightness and delicacy after time in the glass.
Something happens to Champagne aged in magnum; their evolution slows, factors come into play that we can't always explain and it's like a little magic is sprinkled: what was a superbly rich Champagne in bottle, seems even more rich and complex in magnum - they are differently amazing and hence we use the term #magnumeffect
Eight champagnes will be tasted in total, across various styles.
Champagne to be tasted:
Louis Roederer Collection 242 NV in Bottle and Magnum
Taittinger Prelude Grands Crus NV in Bottle and Magnum
Charles Heidsieck Brut Rose NV in Bottle and Magnum
Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2008 in Bottle and Magnum

This was a fascinating discovery, thank you @vint_agedchampagne for the treat!!! @louisroederer_ Vintage 2003 from a very hot year where few vintages were made, but those like Roederer who selected from their extensive vineyard holding have made something spectacular from 66% Pinot Noir & 34% Chardonnay. When my wine tasting friend @essiavellan tasted this in 2009 her observations were:
90-92/100 @essiavellan Tasted March 2009
Medium-deep lemony colour. Soft, ripe fruit nose with red apples, cinnamon and sweet vanilla. The palate is round but with pleasant muscularity and balancing freshness. Long finish with lots of personality and fine, cool, gunpowdery minerality.
Yesterday I opened the bottle, the cork was nice and tight and plenty of “pop” and as I poured I was excited as the colour indicated it was in good condition and showing no signs of age. The aromatics were amazing, strongly stone fruit, dried pineapple, dark plums, hints of dark chocolate, bitter orange with an underlying spicy tone of cinnamon. The palate has a gentleness, its texture wrapping around your tongue like a velvety coating, quite glorious. Really developed in the glass and was a showy champagne that had aged elegantly. Great champagne can come from a hot vintage and shine bright 20 years after harvest! 18.5/20 Nick Baker TFB Founder.
Having recently tasted Bollinger 2003 and Taittinger 2003 and Dom Perignon 2003 all have been truly glorious and probably all of them are now at a beautiful drinking window.
