Bérêche & Fils, based in the village of Ludes, just 15 kilometers south of Reims, stands as the premier grower-producer in this hidden gem of the Champagne region. The estate meticulously tends to 26 plots spread across 11.5 hectares, while also sourcing fruit from an additional two hectares in Ambonnay, Cramant and Trépail. Raphaël Bérêche joined his father, Jean-Pierre, at the estate in 2004, and in 2009, Raphaël and his brother, Vincent Bereche, fully assumed control of both the farming and winemaking operations. Their father officially retired in 2012. Although the family initially experimented with organic farming, they found it challenging to maintain consistent yields due to persistent mildew pressure. Today, the estate largely adheres to organic practices, with the exception of mildew control treatments.
The Bérêche family has employed sustainable agricultural methods for over two decades, utilizing lightweight tractors to prevent soil compaction and eliminating herbicides from their practices since 2002. In the cellar, fermentation occurs naturally, progressing slowly at cool temperatures. While some 30% of the vins clairs for their non-vintage Champagnes are vinified in tanks, the rest of their wines are aged in 350-liter barrels for eight to nine months. Before utilizing new barrels (as they do not purchase second-hand ones), they rinse them with tailles, which are subsequently sold off. Their winemaking approach eschews filtration, and racking is conducted by gravity. After barrel aging, the wines spend an additional two months in tanks, with minimal solids during this phase. For all cuvées, except the Brut Réserve, tirage is done using cork instead of a crown cap.
The brothers made this champagne from Les Hautes Plantes and St-Jean, two of the finest mid-slope parcels in Ludes, that were planted in 1969, one facing east and the other west. The soil is very chalky in both parcels, and the grapes ripen fully but retain a naturally high acidity that is perfect for long ageing. Slow fermentation and short ageing occurred in young 350ltr barrels, it was then given 78 months bottle age 'sur lattes'.
Weather in 2018: Following a mild and very wet winter, spring temperatures were well above seasonal norms, allowing the vines to develop. Then, the warm, dry summer allowed the grapes to ripen quickly with extraordinary quality and quantity. The 2018 harvest came early, producing wines of remarkable fruitiness and elegance.

“The 2018 Extra-Brut Le Cran is another compelling wine in this range from the Bérêche family. Apple tart, apricot, mint, yellow flowers, vanillin and a kiss of French oak lend an exotic flair. Chardonnay speaks with an assertive voice; it was picked at 11.5% potential alcohol and comprises 60% of the blend as opposed to the more typical 50%. Pinot Noir is just behind in terms of ripeness. This needs a bit of time to absorb all of its oak. Dosage is 3.85 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2025.”
93+/100
“Originating from northeast- and northwest-facing sites harvested between September 4 and 5, the 2018 Le Cran Ludes Premier Cru is showing beautifully, opening with aromas of pear, peach and red apple mingled with nuances of blood orange. Medium- to full-bodied, intense and chalky, it is underpinned by ripe yet racy acidity and concludes with a long, saline finish. Disgorged in July 2025, it is a considerable success despite the vintage's abundant yields, even if it represents a slightly softer and more open-knit rendition of Le Cran. It will offer a broad drinking window.”
