Description & Technical Information
-
Champagne Billecart-Salmon was founded with the marriage of Nicolas-François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon in 1818. Situated in the village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, near Epernay. Champagne Billecart-Salmon is still a family-run organisation with seventh generation Mathieu Roland-Billecart overseeing business. In 2016 Chef de Cave François Domi retired after 30 years with Billecart and handed over to his deputy Florent Nys who started with the business in 2005. The vineyards are overseen by Denis Blée and all of the team are members of the eight strong "tasting committee" along with 6th generation François Roland-Billecart and Antoine Roland-Billecart and fifth generation Jean Roland-Billecart. By 2020 production had expanded with grapes now coming from 300 hectares and 40 crus mostly within 20 kms of the winery.

Billecart-Salmon Vintage is dominated by the great Pinot Noir flavours which is tempered by the elegance of the Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a difficult year at first with a mild and rainy spring. The threat of mildew was high and storms in July further raised fears for the health of the grapes. However, a warm August of uninterrupted hot and dry weather was the catalyst for an idyllic harvest. Picking began on the 12th September in perfect conditions.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 73% Grands crus and Premiers crus | Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne
Grape Varieties: 40% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay, 27% Meunier
Ageing: 9 years on the lees
Dosage: 2 g/l
Fermentation: Vinification in stainless steel tanks and Partial malolactic fermentation
Drink: Now to 2030

Tasting Note: The yellow gold hue is adorned with delicate, soft golden glints. The nose has a fruit intensity with citrus notes and nuts. A taut and seductive tactile citrus zest palate with a defined structure.

Jancis Robinson
“Pure and limpid but perhaps without the depth of a great champagne. Very much on the dry side. For a wine from the luscious 2009 vintage this is quite taut and demanding!”

Antonio Galloni
“The 2009 Vintage is another stellar wine in this range from Billecart-Salmon. This is the first time the Vintage includes Meunier in the blend. That approach has worked out so well here. Resonant and generous, the 2009 is so expressive today. The low dosage of two grams per liter is expertly judged. The 2009 is rich, but not heavy, while offering all of the natural generosity of the year.”
