Description & Technical Information
-
In 1976, Bollinger Vintage was re-named Grande Année. Then in 1997, it became La Grande Année - 'The Great Year' - a name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status, because only truly extraordinary years become vintage at Bollinger. La Grande Année made its screen débuts two years later in James Bond's Casino Royale. This vintage is entirely fermented in oak barrel and is produced from thirteen crus: 95% Grand Cru and 5% Premier Cru.

Weather: The 2002 vintage shaped up magnificently over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The vines were in good health and the dehydration of the grape berries helped them reach new heights of ripeness. Generally considered one of the best harvests in the last twenty years.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 95% Grand Cru, 5% Premier Cru | Pinot Noir: Aÿ, Verzenay | Chardonnay: Avize, Chouilly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Grape Varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay
Ageing: 8 years on the lees
Disgorged: October 2010
Dosage: 6 g/l
Drink: Now to 2025

Tasting Note: A champagne with extreme layers of fruit and floral notes. On the nose it has a powerful fruit element that continues through to the palate. Aromatic and creamy tastes add to a long-lasting finish. An incredible expression of a legendary vintage.

Bollinger La Grande Année 2002 does not have a branded gift box.

“60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. Disgorged November 2011. RS 6 g/l.
Tasted blind. Savoury and cheesy and interesting on the nose. Very distinctive. Exciting and very deep flavoured. Very confident and multi-layered. In the prime of life. Not heavy – sufficiently racy. Clean and neat. A firm cast-iron framework. Impressive. Very long.”

“Originally this wine showed an edge of austerity and bitterness over the powerful, compressed core. The R.D. showed more charm upon launch. Tasted in magnum only in May 2016: a mild earthy-mineral oxidative note but under control. Spice, vanilla, apple, apple pie. Long and firm, zesty but laudably harmonious. Points for magnum.”

“Disgorged October 2010. Tasted blind.
Something a bit rubbery on the nose but very tense and exciting. Is this the 2008? Tense and vibrant, with lots of complexity and persistence. Impressive for its age. 12%
Drink 2012-2030”

“Since the year 1990 made vintage wines from Bollinger in a little fruitier more persikodoftande style with slightly less pronounced smokiness and nuttiness. I was always more impressed initially by the previous style, but it feels like the differences even out over time. 2002 is very fruity and a little slippery at the moment, but I am convinced that the fruitiness will be low, and that we will see a deeper beauty over time. Fantastic in magnum.”

“60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. Pale gold. Very sumptuous nose. Inspirationally serious. Layers and dry with enormous tightness and very tiny bead. Something almost beery about the yeast element. You could definitely enjoy this already but there is also massive potential. Very dry finish. Uncompromising. You wouldn't give this to a beginner. Long, peacock's tail finish.”

“The 2002 Brut La Grande Ann?e is marvelous. The 2002 is an understated Grande Ann?e that caresses the palate with layers of effortless, weightless fruit. The mousse is exceptionally fine, which adds to the impression of total elegance. This is a relatively bright, floral Grande Ann?e with plenty of aromatic lift, inner perfume and no sense of heaviness at all. A rich, creamy finish adds the final note of complexity and pedigree. The 2002 is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, 71% from Grand Cru villages and 29% from Premier Crus. Disgorged February 2011.”
