Description & Technical Information
-
In 1976, Bollinger Vintage was re-named Grande Année. Then in 1997, it became La Grande Année - 'The Great Year' - a name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status, because only truly extraordinary years become vintage at Bollinger. La Grande Année made its screen débuts two years later in James Bond's Casino Royale. This vintage is entirely fermented in oak barrel and is produced from thirteen crus: 95% Grand Cru and 5% Premier Cru.

Weather: The 2004 vintage saw an initial winter of mild temperatures with intermittent storms and hail. The spring and summer months were hot and sunny and the sugar levels late in September produced good quality fruits, especially for the Pinot Noir grapes. A huge harvest in general for the region. Overall many experts believe that 2004 is one of the greatest vintages of the last two decades.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 95% Grand Cru, 5% Premier Cru | Pinot Noir: Aÿ, Verzenay | Chardonnay: Avize, Chouilly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Grape Varieties: 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Ageing: 8 years on the lees
Disgorged: September 2012
Dosage: 7 g/l
Drink: Now to 2028

Tasting Note: The delicate colour of this champagne characterises both the wine's maturity and Bollinger's winemaking methods. On the nose, initial honey and gingerbread aromas shine through whilst the palate offers ripe fruit flavours with hints of vanilla. This creamy flavour and subtle acidity combine to leave a long finish - this is a complex champagne.

“Disgorged September 2012. Tasted blind.
Looks, and tastes, relatively youthful. More mineral nose. Very fresh palate. Lots of zest, almost citrus. Long and satisfying. 12%
Drink 2017-2025”

“Red fruit dominant nose with pastry nuances. There is a beautifully Burgundian feel to it with an accentuated oaky note without too much of an oxidative ad-on. Dry, serious finish with its 7g/l dosage. Big and bold but not one of the most complex of vintages. ”

“Really interesting, complex nose with lots of age and development and polished autumn-leaf characters. Fascinating wine that is probably too interesting to throw back at a reception. Complete and compelling.”

“(disgorged January, 2013): Light, bright gold. Powerful orchard and pit fruit aromas are complemented by smoky lees, iodine, chamomile and buttered toast. At once fleshy and energetic, offering deeply pitched poached pear, peach pit and brioche flavors and a suave floral element. Finishes smoky and very long, with mounting spiciness and lingering floral and vanilla notes.”
