Description & Technical Information
-
Bollinger's Special Cuvée champagne is representative of their vineyards. With 60% of the House's vineyards producing Pinot Noir, this grape is the predominate variety in the Special Cuvée blend. Bollinger allow their non-vintage to mature for three years, which is twice as long as required, as they believe that great champagne needs time to develop its full character. In 1911, Georges Bollinger's British agent gave him the idea for the name Special Cuvée - "special" written the English way, without an accent. He thought the French expression "brut sans année" was no match for such a subtle champagne.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 85% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier
Reserve Wine: 10%
Ageing: 3 years on the lees
Dosage : 7 g/l
Drink: Now to 2022

Tasting Note: A golden colour with a beautifully fine mousse. The nose is aromatic and complex with ripe fruit and spicy aromas. On the palate, rich apple and peach notes burst through. Hints of brioche and fresh walnut linger on the lasting finish to enhance this powerful Special Cuvée.

“Pale-medium gold with a burnished tint. Oxidative apple rind, some almond and bready lees, and black-cherry tones. Fairly fine mousse, with a vinosity and suppleness. Rich stone fruit and apple. Good length. ”

“Refined nose with stylish restraint. Richness of spicy-earthy notes carefully intertwined to the lemon, apple pie, baked pear, cinnamon and vanilla tones. Super mild oxidative character beneath the intense fruitiness. Seamless structure on the generous palate. Long, mineral, dry finish. Built to last, so deserves additional post-disgorgement ageing. ”

“60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. Bollinger don’t talk about which wine their non-vintage blends are based on because reserve wines constitute a good 50% of the blend. This was bottled in 2013 and disgorged in 2016 so 2012 is the youngest vintage. 150+ different wines in the blend. Maybe six or seven different vintages.
Very firm, Bollinger savoury style on the nose with a bone-dry finish and lots of chewiness. Dried apple-skin flavours. Really long. A fan of flavours on the end. Very distinctive.
Drink 2016-2020”

“Refined nose with stylish restraint. Carefully intertwined spicy-earthy notes to the lemon, apple pie, baked pear, cinnamon and vanilla tones. Mild deliberately oxidative character beneath the intense fruitiness. Seamless structure on the generous palate. Long, mineral, dry (8-9g/l) finish. Built to last, so deserves additional post-disgorgement ageing.”

“Aromatic, with accents of bread dough, smoked almond and crème de cassis, this creamy Champagne is lightly chalky in texture and framed by firm acidity, with flavors of glazed apricot, orange blossom and rich hints of clover honey and coffee liqueur. Drink now through 2022.”

“As always, since its first vintage, the House offers a complex wine, vinous and fresh at once. The aromas of white fruit compote, vanilla finely peppery notes play with finesse and smoothness of the bubbles. Indisputably major. ”

“Pale yellow. Toasty aromas of apple and pear nectar are complemented by hints of toffee, honey and orange zest. Full and expansive on the palate, offering ripe orchard and pit fruit flavors and an undercurrent of smoky minerals and buttered toast. Smooth and gently spicy on the clinging, nicely focusd finish.”

“Lots of evolution on the nose. Lively and complete. Ready now. Fresh and well balanced. Complete.”

“The classic Bollinger nonvintage is, as always, rich and firmly structured. With the roundness that comes from aging the wines in wood before blending, it has a ripe, smooth edge. Underneath, the texture is solid, with hints of apple and pear and mature acidity.”
91/100

“The NV Brut Special Cuvée is fabulous. Hints of pears, pastry crust and hazelnut lead to an expansive core of fruit. There is plenty of the signature Bollinger oxidative style in this rich, enveloping Champagne. Once again the Special Cuvée is one of the best Champagnes in its price range”
