Description & Technical Information
-
Roses de Jeanne is the range made from Cédric Bouchard's own vines, rather than his fathers vineyards which he also manages. He promotes low yields which results in an extremely complex, full flavoured champagne. The vineyards are farmed bio-dynamic with hand labour and horses. The Cote des Bar is typically quite different soils to the more northerly regions, more Kimmeridgian soil so a blend of limestone and clay, these more clay rich soils and the slightly warmer temperatures tend to bring broader and fuller champagnes.
A single vineyard champagne from a 1.45 hectare "lieu-dit" of Val Vilaine with vines 35 year old. 300-500 cases produced annually. The wine is bottled with a low sugar to yeast ratio giving a lower pressure champagne around 4.25 bars, compared to a typical 6 bars, so you get a softer mousse which is perfect for young champagnes with zero dosage. Bouchard prefers to go for fruit freshness and likes to keep lees contact much shorter than is typical in the region. This is from dominant vintage of 2018 and is identified on the back label with V18

A champagne with excellent weight and balance exuding delicate fragrances of flowers and beguiling red berry and plum fruits with hint of nutmeg and a mineral imprint from the calcareous-clay soil. With the lower pressure in the finished champagne this gentler mousse is perfect for a champagne with no dosage.
Champagne Cedric Bouchard Overview
+
Established in 2000, Cedric Bouchard created his own Champagne House, Roses de Jeanne. Based in Aube, with originally only 1.09ha under vines he has now established Roses de Jeanne as one of the most promising small Champagne producers. Bouchard focuses on bio-dynamic production and champions the Pinot Noir grape variety.
Since the beginning, he embraced the philosophy of; single vineyard, single variety (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc), single vintage, zero dosage Champagnes.
“Bouchard's NV Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine (2018) is fleshy and dramatic, bursting with aromas of pear, warm bread, orange oil, nutmeg and beeswax. Medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, it's one of the most gourmand, generous renditions of Val Vilaine to date, yet it remains beautifully precise and vibrant—even racy. It will be hard to resist young, but I suspect it will also evolve very gracefully in the cellar. As usual, while this is officially a "non-vintage" cuvée, the code "L18" on the label designates the year from which it is entirely derived.”

Antonio Galloni
“The NV (2018) Blanc de Noirs Val Vilaine is bright, fresh and wonderfully nuanced. Orchard fruit, citrus and floral notes give the Val Vilaine so much energy. Cédric Bouchard coaxes so much nuance from these 40 year-old vines. The Val Vilaine is always the youngest wine in the range - the current release is the 2018, which spent just 15 months on its lees - but it will give readers who aren't familiar with these wines a very good idea of the house style. Zero dosage. Disgorged: April 2020. ”
