Description & Technical Information
-
Of the three Champagne houses named Heidsieck - all originating from families once related - Charles is the smallest and arguably, the best. Established in 1851 by the nephew of Piper-Heidsieck's owner, Charles Heidsieck himself was the original 'Champagne Charlie'. In 2011 both Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck were bought by EPI Group headed by Christopher Descours, he has provided significant finance for both Houses allowing them to grow their vineyard holdings, grape purchasing and production. Today, production occurs alongside sister company Piper-Heidsieck in an ultra-modern functional wine-making facility on the southern outskirts of Reims. The Charles Heidsieck Cellars are a Unesco World Heritage site and comprise more than eight kilometres of chalk tunnels interlinking forty seven subterranean cathedrals called Crayères, reaching 30 metres high and believed to have been dug out in the 3rd century.

Charles Heidsieck's prestige cuvée is a blend of pure Chardonnay from just five different Crus: Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Vertus. An absolute masterpiece from the Côte des Blancs, this cuvée spends more than fifteen years maturing in the heart of Charles Heidsieck's two-thousand-year-old chalk cellars.

Weather: The 1995 harvest was a large crop and shared similar characteristics with the renowned 1998. Following four consecutive years of tough growing conditions, 1995 came as a huge relief to the region - the first universally declared vintage since 1990. The summer was mainly hot, with some showers a few weeks before the harvest. Now, over twenty years since bottling, champagne from 1995 are starting to show flavours of incredibly complex, rich and concentrated fruits.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: Grand Cru | Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger & 1er Cru Vertus
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Ageing: 15 years on the lees
Disgorged: Spring 2014
Dosage: 12.2 g/l
Drink: Now to 2029

Tasting Note: A rich golden colour, the bouquet expresses buttery and vanilla aromas. The palate is rich and complex with notes of pineapple and ripe white fruit flavour. This tastes surprisingly young, displaying all the characteristics of a mature Chardonnay and has incredible potential for ageing. Simply exceptional! Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires 1995 is a seriously voluptuous champagne.

“Disgorged 2015. Daniel Thibault was so confident of the quality and longevity of this wine that he made 10 times the amount his boss suggested (on the basis that presidents of champagne companies change much more frequently than chefs de cave). Very little bottle variation apparently. Some of the vast lots are disgorged every year in summer.
Still greenish gold. Still lots of freshness on the nose. Noble and magnificent. Savoury and yet lacy. Full phenolic ripeness (a bit more than 2004, which is currently embargoed). Dances on the palate. Lovely, very lightly toasty, mature Chardonnay flavours but definitely tight-knit champagne not burgundy! So clean.

“An amazing bouquet of gunpowder, coffee and toasted almonds. The palate is a super refined balance of nutmeg, white chocolate & mocca with an acidity that delineates it all beautifully with its flintiness. Great purity and length!”

“Vivid gold. Heady aromas of candied citrus fruits, flowers, truffle, gingerbread and iodine, with an intensely smoky overtone. Deep, pungent and palate-staining, with the orchard and pit fruit flavors reaching every corner of the palate and showing impressive power without any excess weight. Even more extroverted than last year's release, finishing with excellent cling and lingering smokiness.”

“Deep, pure and fresh on the fruit-intense and complex nose, the 1995 Blanc des Millenaires is still young and incredibly fresh on the palate. This is refreshingly pure, concentrated, fruity and perfectly round Champagne that reveals a great tension and mineral complexity. It also has a long and salty finish. Keep it for ten or 20 years.”

“Aged for 15 years on the lees. Very rich and broad.”

“Stunning, come-hither toast, vanilla and coffee nose with white and tropical fruit richness. Powerful, mellow, mature palate with oily smoothness and the softest texture. Long and dense. Fully mature and impossible not to like.”

Alison Napjus
“A mouthwatering Champagne, refined and satiny in texture, with a citrusy overtone to the flavours of apricot preserves, toasted hazelnut and brioche, crystallized honey and fleur de sel. Presents a lasting, smoke-and spice-finish.”
