Of the three Champagne houses named Heidsieck - all originating from families once related - Charles is the smallest and arguably, the best. Established in 1851 by the nephew of Piper-Heidsieck's owner, Charles Heidsieck himself was the original 'Champagne Charlie'. In 2011 both Charles Heidsieck and Piper-Heidsieck were bought by EPI Group headed by Christopher Descours, he has provided significant finance for both Houses allowing them to grow their vineyard holdings, grape purchasing and production. Today, production occurs alongside sister company Piper-Heidsieck in an ultra-modern functional wine-making facility on the southern outskirts of Reims. The Charles Heidsieck Cellars are a Unesco World Heritage site and comprise more than eight kilometres of chalk tunnels interlinking forty seven subterranean cathedrals called Crayères, reaching 30 metres high and believed to have been dug out in the 3rd century. This is the 8th release of Blanc des Millenaires since the first release of the 1983 vintage.

Charles Heidsieck's prestige cuvée is a blend of pure Chardonnay from just five different Crus: Avize for verve and minerality; Cramant for complexity and ageability; Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for balance & freshness; Oger for creaminess and weight; and Vertus for floral freshness. An absolute masterpiece from the Côte des Blancs, this cuvée spends eight years maturing in the heart of Charles Heidsieck's two-thousand-year-old chalk cellars. This is unusual as three winemakers all contributed to the finished champagnes; Thierry Roset was the winemaker who made the base wines and saw them through their 1st fermentation in stainless steel. His unexpected death after harvest resulted in Cyril Brun taking ove rthe Chef de Cave role, he blended the wines in spring 2015 and bottled them leaving in spring 2023. Elise Losfelt became the new chef de cave and disgorged the champagne, choosing the Liqueur d'Expedition and dosage in July 2023.

Weather: Following inclement weather in early 2014, an early spring encouraged flowering at the end of May. After particularly cool and humid weather at the beginning of summer, the sun reappeared mid-August for an Indian summer that lasted until September. The 2014 vintage boasts Chardonnays with sensational crispness as total acid levels are relatively high so you have that rare combination of ripeness in the fruit, which in Chardonnay give you tropical notes like guava and pineapple and the chalk in the Côte des Blancs adds that mineral touch. Blanc de Blancs will be the star of the vintage.

This is the second vintage of BdM in the new longer neck bottle and we would expect that to add to the bottles "reductive properties" potentially extending its ageing ability.

“The aromatics leap out the glass, you see the core of citrus fruit plus tropical notes, grilled pineapple, guava, tangerine orange and the palate has the broadening effect from 8 years lees ageing and the fruit just expands further on the palate. You feel the Cote des Blancs minerality and bright acidities typical of the year, leaving you a tingle of salinity on the finish. There is real purity here, bright fruit and that lightness of touch of the chalk rich vineyards. This is the 8th release since the first 1983 vintage and there is no doubt this is by far the best. Purity, density, freshness and delightful lightness.”

“2014 Blanc des Millénaires is only the 8th vintage of this wine released since the inaugural wine in 1983. Let’s not beat around the bush – it is a spectacular Champagne... This is a raspingly refreshing wine. It is so precision-cut you might want to wear gloves. There is no doubt this unnervingly keen creation is not one for beginners. And if you feel a tear fighting to set free from a loose duct, just let it go. This wine is all about emotion and you must be leaden-hearted for it not to move you profoundly with its laser-sighted flavours and extraordinary tension. Flavour-wise it is incredible how so much direction and decisiveness can emerge from such a seemingly demure wine. Approaching its tenth birthday, and with eight of these years spent on its lees, it seems like this wine has been chiselled out of a gleamingly white chalk sarcophagus as it sits naked in the glass, and there is so much potential here it takes the breath away... This is a landmark vintage for Heidsieck’s incredible Chardonnay and while it is straight-jacketed, brutally honest, and epically long, there are just enough white florals, tender sablé tones and dramatic citrus zestiness, to signal that this wine will be nothing short of era-defining given time.”
