Description & Technical Information

Champagne Drappier is neither a Grande Marque nor strictly a grower, they have 60 hectares of vineyards in the Aube, the southern area of Champagne around its winery in the village of Urville. It also buys in two thirds of its supply from vineyard owners in the appellation to craft around 1.8 million bottles annually. Drappier's focus is on sustainability and is Champagne’s first carbon-neutral producer, with an increasing number of its vineyards certified organic, currently 15 ha are certified organic. They are also well known for lower sulphur dioxide additions and low dosage and because of this my suggestion is to enjoy the champagnes at their freshest consume them in the first few years after release.

The Drappier Reserve de L'Oenotheque Brut is the living memory of the family home. Preserved in their twelfth-century Cistercian cellars, this collection showcases the ancient, and often very rare vintages. When Drappier consider them ready to reveal the intensity and originality of the year they were produced, they disgorge small batches, sometimes even just one bottle.

Weather: The 2006 vintage was a year of mixed weather. It began with a rainy spell and late spring, but with little or no frost in the vineyards. Early summer was positive, with the months of June and July creating perfect conditions for flowering. Although there were some storms in late-July, the overall health of the vines was great since the weather remained hot through to the harvest with spells of rain in August promoting even healthier grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Aube

Tasting Note: Rich gold with hints of copper highlights. The initial impact is the smoky charm from the Magnum Effect, then you see layers of dried citrus fruits, some dried summer fruits of raspberry and strawberry and a rich yellow fruit, BBQ'd pineapple and succulent peach. Utterly delicious, powerful Champagne in the mouth, with spicy notes and strong mineral chalk finish keeping it light and refreshing.
