Girard-Bonnet Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Recueil Extrait No1 2018

-
Girard-Bonnet is a new estate, located in the Grand Cru village of Les Mesnil sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. Owned by Paul Girard, a young and passionate vigneron, born 1995, joining together his father, Philippe Girard’s holdings in Les Mesnil and his mother, Dominique Bonnet’s holdings in Oger. The twelve hectares of vineyard land is split almost evenly between these two revered Grand Crus. Paul returned home in 2018, after studying viticulture and enology in Avize, followed by a double master’s degree in Wine Management and Business in Bordeaux and immediately began work on this new project. Paul is committed to organic viticulture, certified in 2022 and Demeter biodynamic certification in 2023. The vineyards and the soil health are the basis for the quality he produces. The winery is very high tech, with careful use of oak that he integrates well into the champagnes, never prominent, just adding texture and interest.

Recueil Extrait No1, with the assistance of Philippe Girard, two plots of old vines were selected, one in Mesnil sur Oger, the other in Oger, from the lieux-dits “Mussettes” and “Caferlane”. Blended at the press, vinified in a single vat.

Vineyard: The Girard-Bonnet vineyard comprises 12 hectares mainly located in the Côte des Blancs, more precisely in Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, classified as Grand Cru and Vertus Premier Cru and famous for their high-quality Chardonnays. The use of herbicides was phased out as from the 2000s under Philippe Girard’s guidance. The estate then took an individualised approach to its vines, as each one requires specific care so that it can reveal its characteristics depending on its age, location and exposure. The use of plant treatments like herbal teas, essential oils, green manure and eco-pasture, is common practice in their vineyards.

Tasting Note: The nose shows a lift of lemony honeycomb that translates directly onto the palate, where the light body, pervaded by a fine, creamy mousse of exquisitely tiny bubbles, presents a show of saltiness. Blonde, cold shortcrust and oatmeal provide the autolytic backdrop of this svelte, elegant and salty wine with its subtle finish.. - Tasted by Anne Krebiehl MW

“This tiny-volume experimental cuvée comes from a single vat of co-pressed and co-fermented Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Chardonnay. One senses some nutty evolution on the spicy and chalky-mineral nose of peachy fruit. The creamy-caressing mousse is the wine’s best quality alongside its profound mineral soul. The ending feels a little edgy and dry at 1,5 g/l. A fine bottling, but considering where Paul Girard is now in his winemaking, this wine does not yet carry quite the same perfectionist precision. ”

“The 2018 Extra Brut Recueil Extrait No. 1 Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from Les Mesnil sur Oger and Oger in equal parts, from two plots, co-harvested and co-fermented, resulting in just one tank. The nose shows a lift of lemony honeycomb that translates directly onto the palate, where the light body, pervaded by a fine, creamy mousse of exquisitely tiny bubbles, presents a show of saltiness. Blonde, cold shortcrust and oatmeal provide the autolytic backdrop of this svelte, elegant and salty wine with its subtle finish. Disgorged: December, 2023. - Anne Krebiehl MW”

“Smells of jasmine tea, to begin with. Silver-tip tea and peaches. Something somehow silvery about this wine: the tang of an old pewter tine, the gleam of an old sugar spoon. Green peppercorns and purslane. Green walnuts. Very unusual. Linear horizontal bitterness forms a spine and defines the finish.”

“A medium bright yellow hue, the 2018 Champagne Recueil Extrait No. 1 Blanc De Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut comes from Les Mesnil sur Oger and Oger in equal parts and is a cuvée that changes year to year from different plots. This is an impressive wine in that it's approachable and ripe but also has the structure to age over the coming 8-10 years. Medium bodied, it fills the palate with notes of citrus oils, savory salinity, green apples, and a hint of crystalline honey. It is a charmer but has a good deal of mineral texture and a pillowing mousse. Aged in a single tank, it saw 1.5 grams per liter dosage and was disgorged in December 2023.”
