Gosset Celebris 2002

Gosset Celebris 2002

Gosset Celebris 2002
Founded in 1584, Gosset is the oldest winemaking House in the Champagne region. Production remained fairly low-key until 1994, when the House was sold to the family owned Renaud-Cointreau Group. This takeover saw an increased level of investment improve their vineyard management and fostered a doubling of Gosset's annual production to nearly one million bottles in just fourteen years. Owning just a few vineyards, Gosset purchase nearly all of the grapes required for production. After sixteen generations in the famous village of Aÿ, the winery has only recently moved to a larger and new plot in Épernay.

Gosset Celebris is the star of the Gosset range and the House prestige cuvée, produced only in exceptional years. The malic acid, skilfully preserved, gives freshness and elegance to this great cuvée, vintages of which will be enjoyed for several decades to come.

Weather: The 2002 vintage shaped up magnificently over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The vines were in good health and the dehydration of the grape berries helped them reach new heights of ripeness. Generally considered one of the best harvests in the last twenty years.

News Article: Gosset Celebris 2002 placed fifth in our comprehensive Prestige Cuvées from 2002 blind tasting in October 2016 with Jancis Robinson MW. Read the full write-up here.

Tasting Note: This is a delightful golden yellow colour with a fine stream of bubbles. On the nose this gracious champagne has alluring aromas of pear and pineapple. On the palate a fresh and expansive taste of lemon and orchard fruits. This is a champagne with a very good finish. From magnum this is even more stunning.

Founded in 1584, Gosset is the oldest House in the Champagne region. Production remained fairly low-key until 1994, when the House was sold to the family owned Renaud-Cointreau Group. This takeover saw an increased level of investment improve their vineyard management and fostered a doubling of Gosset's annual production to nearly one million bottles in just fourteen years. Production was accelerated by the return to the beautiful old-fashioned bottles identical to the ones used by Jean Gosset in the 18th century. After sixteen generations in the famous village of Aÿ, the winery has only recently moved to Épernay and the modern ex-Malakoff cellars.

Owning just a few vineyards, Gosset purchase nearly all of the grapes required for production. The character of Aÿ has a strong influence on the House style, however the true identity of Gosset lies in the blocking of malolactic fermentation. A natural process where malic acid is converted to lactic acid, this can allow champagnes that don't tend to have fresher acidity to be more delicate and fruit-driven. Preventing this process gives the winemaking team at Gosset the chance to showcase the bright fruitiness and brisk acidity when the grapes are ripe and the quality is high - a hallmark of the House style.

“Disgorged August 2013. RS 5 g/l. 52% Chardonnay, 48% Pinot Noir. From Louis Latour Agencies UK.
Tasted blind. Some oak? Severe and dry on the end. Bollinger or Clos des Goisses? Lots of raciness and very dry (which should have led me to this, one of only two Extra Bruts in the tasting). Almost severe.”

“The 2002 Celebris Vintage Extra Brut displays a noble, clear, fresh and subtle bouquet with white fruit and brioche flavors intertwined with mineral aromas. Silky textured and highly elegant, this full-bodied yet delicate blend of 48% Pinot Noir and 52% Chardonnay is clear and straight on the palate, revealing a ripe and intense, yet refined fruit. It has a persistent and complex, firmly structured, stimulatingly pure and salty finish. Great finesse and ethereal lightness here, with great purity and mineral tension. It also has the intensity of perfect fruit in the long and persistent finish. A great Champagne for the next ten and probably many more years.”

Decanter
“An impressive evolved nose with hints of mushroom and bonfire. Elegant, with plenty of life but showing tertiary characters, such as truffle, yet balanced by crisp acidity; it lingers delicately.

James Suckling
“A deep, rich and toasty nose that has a wealth of cashewy, nutty aromas and dried lemon pith, nougat and bright dried cherry fruits too. The palate's bold, assertive and full of flavor with really expansive orchard fruits. It's pared back to reveal a dry, essence-like finish with length and poise aplenty. Drink now.”

“Extremely dense and dry - most impressive, though verging on austere without anything to eat with it.”
96/100
Roger Voss
“Aged for 10 years before disgorging and a further time before release, this is Gosset's top wine from a great vintage year. Extra Brut means it is dry, although the age of this wine has softened the intense acidity and turned it into an elegant, mature wine of great complexity as well as immediate attraction. It will age further at least until 2022, although it is totally drinkable now.”
