Founded in 1584, Gosset is the oldest winemaking House in the Champagne region. Production remained fairly low-key until 1994, when the House was sold to the family owned Renaud-Cointreau Group. This takeover saw an increased level of investment improve their vineyard management and fostered a doubling of Gosset's annual production to nearly one million bottles in just fourteen years. Owning just a few vineyards, Gosset purchase nearly all of the grapes required for production. After sixteen generations in the famous village of Aÿ, the winery has only recently moved to a larger and new plot in Épernay.

Gosset Celebris is the star of the Gosset range and the House prestige cuvée, produced only in exceptional years. The malic acid, skilfully preserved, gives freshness and elegance to this great cuvée, vintages of which will be enjoyed for several decades to come. The chef de cave likes to do long lees ageing in the tank before he blends the wines the spring following the harvest and will actively stir the lees in the tank. This helps fill out the texture and softens the perception of the malic acid, since they don't want their wines to complete the ML fermentation, so the acid perception is more prominent.

Weather: Mostly a warm year, 2007 was characterised by unexpected major weather events. A warm spring was followed by a cool summer, although the end of the ripening process was excellent, with harvests taking place in ideal conditions.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand & Premier Cru | Chardonnay: Avize, Vertus and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger | Pinot Noir: Cumieres, Aÿ, Bouzy & Ambonnay
Grape Varieties: 57% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir
Ageing: 12 years on the lees
Dosage: 3 g/l
Drink: Now to 2028

Tasting Note: An opulent appearance: bright pale gold with emerald green highlights. Aromas of honey and hints of caramel lead to a refreshing palate of pears, pineapple and citrus fruits. This prestige cuvée from 2007 has incredible balance and is sure to improve further with a little patience.
Founded in 1584, Gosset is the oldest House in the Champagne region. Production remained fairly low-key until 1994, when the House was sold to the family owned Renaud-Cointreau Group. This takeover saw an increased level of investment improve their vineyard management and fostered a doubling of Gosset's annual production to nearly one million bottles in just fourteen years. Production was accelerated by the return to the beautiful old-fashioned bottles identical to the ones used by Jean Gosset in the 18th century. After sixteen generations in the famous village of Aÿ, the winery has only recently moved to Épernay and the modern ex-Malakoff cellars.

Owning just a few vineyards, Gosset purchase nearly all of the grapes required for production. The character of Aÿ has a strong influence on the House style, however the true identity of Gosset lies in the blocking of malolactic fermentation. A natural process where malic acid is converted to lactic acid, this can allow champagnes that don't tend to have fresher acidity to be more delicate and fruit-driven. Preventing this process gives the winemaking team at Gosset the chance to showcase the bright fruitiness and brisk acidity when the grapes are ripe and the quality is high - a hallmark of the House style.

Expert Reviews

96/100
James Suckling
“This stylish, complex and elegantly powerful Champagne is the pinnacle of Gosset’s range and delivers such layered, fresh and complex style. The palate has a super smooth-honed, long and plush feel with a wealth of grilled almonds and grapefruit. Long, succulent draw through the finish. Magnificent. Drink now.”

“The 2007 Celebris Extra Brut is the latest rendition of this cuvée, which cellar master Odilon de Varine describes as "not a vintage Gosset but a Gosset vintage"—meaning that it's produced only in years adapted to the house's powerful but austere style. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of lemon oil, marzipan, warm biscuits and wet stones, it's full-bodied, with a deep and concentrated core of ripe but racy fruit, a tangy spine of acidity and an elegant pinpoint mouse, displaying terrific purity and precision.”
