Champagne Henri Giraud is the oldest Champagne house still owned by its founding family the Giraud-Hémart family has farmed vines at Aÿ since 1625. However, it is only since current head Claude Giraud took over that the wines have been released under the family name.

Using Grand Cru fruit from some of the top sites in the village of Aÿ, the wine is fermented and matured in oak, resulting in a distinctively rich and textural Champagne with beautifully pure fruit, stunning freshness and prominently decedent aromatics. Created using a very hands-on approach, with grapes harvested by hand and élevage taking place for 12 months in oak barrels sourced from the Argonne forest close to the vineyards, the Champagne then spends a further 4 years in bottle on fine lees.

Weather: 2019 was a hot year which made for a hot, dry vintage. Alternating periods of hot and cold weather began in winter, with temperatures rising to 20°C in February. In April and May, spring frosts hit 1000ha of vineyards in Champagne, which mildly affected Bollinger’s vineyards in Aÿ and Cuis. This spring weather gave way to rainy conditions, forcing the Maison’s teams to be vigilant faced with the threat of mildew. Flowering was delayed by these changeable weather conditions, which were followed by heat waves and are record high temperature of 41°C on the 25th of July. Sunburned grape clusters reduced yields still further and drought conditions during August and September encouraged grapes to ripen quickly. Despite the difficult weather conditions through out the year, the harvest was remarkable. Thanks to their crop of extremely healthy grapes, Bollinger could expect a beautifully ripe vintage which gave rise to a delicate, complex wine.

Tasting Note: Vivid apricot fruit and a lovely creaminess on the nose that carries through to the palate, broadening out to reveal notes ranging from delicate blossom and citrus oil to honeycomb and toasted brioche. The texture is fantastic, with the House’s signature vinous character and mouth-coating feel. It retains beautiful balance with sapidity and acidity lifting the long finish.
Contemporaries of Henri IV and his descendants, the Hémart family settled permanently in Aÿ at the beginning of the 17th century. Their history took root there and became closely interwoven with the momentous historical events relating to Champagne from the 18th century onwards. At the opening of the 20th century, Léon Giraud married Miss Hémart and reconstructed the magnificent family vineyard, which had been ravaged by phylloxera. Today, Claude Giraud, the 12th generation of the Giraud-Hémart family, is in charge of the fortunes of the family business.

The Giraud-Hémart family own 20 hectares - 35 parcels of Grand Cru land of which 26 is planted with Pinot Noir and 9 with Chardonnay. Only 17 of the Champagne region's 323 Crus are classed as Grand Crus (rated 100%). The wine production of Giraud estate is environmentally-friendly, subscribing to the 'lutte-raisonnée' (limited intervention grape growing).

The overall production is limited to 250 000 bottles a year, making the Giraud Champagne stand apart from the majority of bulk-producing champagne houses.

Jancis Robinson MW
“Elegant, tapered bottle. To be launched by UK importer New Generation on 19 July 2024. I assume the usual blend of 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, some of it vinified and raised in small Argonne oak barrels for one year. MV stands for 'multi-vintage'. This is based on 2019 with the addition of one-third older wine from a perpetual reserve (solera system) begun in 1990. Annoying agrafe clip over the cork. Pale gold. Rich nose. but with sufficient life and freshness…very nice balance. Complete and quite a feat to make a wine so interesting from such relatively young wine. Great depth and persistence. Drink: 2024-2030.”

James Suckling
“What makes this wine is the fine, velvet texture at the end that rolls off the finish. Dried-citrus, pastry and light walnut aromas here. I like the subtle, woodsy undertones, more of a deep-forest kind than toastiness. It’s powerful, broad and intense, with a solid structure and framing, but a very fine texture with seamless bubbles. So textural. 80% pinot noir and 20% chardonnay. One third perpetual reserve and two thirds of 2019. Try after 2025.”

“A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, the NV Brut Grand Cru Aÿ Fût de Chêne MV19, based two-thirds on the 2019 vintage and one-third on réserve perpétuelle or soléra, exudes a delicate, pure bouquet of spices, pear, white peach and mirabelle mingled with delicate touches of vanilla pod and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and layered, rich and perfectly balanced, it's seamless with bright acids and a long, delicate, white-pepper finish. Vinified and matured 50% in new barrels and 50% in one-year-old barrels, the oak is barely noticeable. Dosage: five grams per liter.”

Antonio Galloni
“The MV 19 is a very sexy wine. Radiant and enveloping in feel, the 2019 shows plenty of the ripeness of the vintage, but also a good bit of energy. Lemon confit, marzipan, fresh white flowers, mint, tangerine peel and dried flowers lend nuance throughout. There’s terrific presence here, in the more laid-back style that has become the norm. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 22, 2023.”
