Henriot Champagne was officially founded in 1808 under Apolline Henriot. She was the niece of the very famous Abbé Godinot, an erudite man who contributed to improvements in viticulture and the making of the Champagne wine. Apolline, an enterprising woman of great character, sold her wines both in France and became a huge success with royalty and Champagne Henriot became the favourite firstly at the Dutch court, then in Austria and Hungary. She passed on her savoir-faire to her grandson, Ernest and there the Henriot family tradition was born. From generation to generation, the House of Henriot has devoted all its talent to creating the most superb wines from grapes carefully selected from the great terroirs on the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

Weather in 2008: After a rainy but mild winter without any prolonged cold spells, spring arrived with some very localised frosts. Cool weather returned in June and the infrequent sunshine prolonged the feeling of freshness. The spring to autumn weather was bright with sunny spells and the long, hot days and cool nights during September gave the grapes excellent acidity during the harvest period. The 2008 vintage is fast emerging as one of the best since the renowned and now-legendary 2002.

Tasting Note: Citrus fruit and yellow fruit aromas dominate on the palate, together with vine peach and nectarine, and a discrete floral, blossom dimension. Subtle notes of honey and candied lemon bring a full-flavoured edge, together with silky character. Freshness and airy lightness command on the palate. Grapefruit, apricot, citron and fresh citrus fruit come to life, followed by lingering notes of pate de fruit, yet constantly underscored by great minerality. Very long, refined, silky and refreshing on the finish.
In 1640, the Henriot family settles in Champagne and begins developing their cloth before quickly adding wine to their family activities. After acquiring land to plant vines, the family gains knowledge about viticulture and becomes experts on their Terroirs.

The treatise "Manière de cultiver la vigne et de faire le vin en Champagne" published in 1718, attributed to Canon Godinot, was a source of inspiration for Apolline Henriot, founder of the Maison Henriot, whose great-uncle he is.

In 1808, Apolline Henriot, young widow of Nicolas Henriot, founds Maison Henriot. Owner of a vineyard in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, Apolline has a deep love for the Champagne region, the beauty of its vines and its landscapes. This is how her desire « To to shed light on her lands through a Champagne » was born. She then founded the House and created the first Henriot cuvée, now known as Henriot Brut Souverain.

In 1880, Apolline Henriot’s great grandson, Paul Henriot, married a young woman from the Côte des Blancs, Marie Marguet. This marriage gave way to a real transition of the Maison Henriot’s vineyards. Initially composed exclusively of three crus from the Montagne de Reims planted with Pinot Noir, three crus planted with Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs were added: Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly.

Many members of the line of Apolline Henriot, founder of Maison Henriot, trained as agricultural engineers, have contributed to developing the expertise and strengthening the care given to the vines. In 1920, the family carried out many soil analysis. Maison Henriot therefore launched a soil knowledge project at that time.

In the early 1970s, Joseph Henriot, 7th generation of the Henriot family, decided to enhance the library wines collection of Maison Henriot, which had been initiated by Apolline Henriot more than two centuries earlier, when she founded the House. In 1976 Joseph found time to buy Charles Heidsieck, installed his head winemaker, Daniel Thibault at Charles and over the next nine years lifted up Charles to new heights, before selling it in 1985. Two years later in 1987 Joseph took a big decision, selling the magnificent Henriot brand and estate of 125 hectares of vineyards for an 11% share in Veuve Clicquot, part of the fast expanding LVMH luxury goods group, along with taking a board role. He left LVMH in 1994 and bought back the Henriot brand, but not the vineyards. He was soon hard at work again, purchasing Bouchard Père et Fils, which had fallen on hard times, investing heavily in a new winery. By 1998 he bought Fevre in Chablis and in 2008 he bought Château Poncié, a 120-acre estate in the Beaujolais village of Fleurie, renaming it Villa Ponciago. Along with finding time to rebuild Champagne Henriot's production and reputation along with leasing vineyards.

The Maison remained in family ownership until 2022 when it merged with Artémis Domaines, owners of Château Latour, Clos de Tart and Château-Grillet. At the time Maisons & Domaines Henriot, was not just the champagne House, but owned Bouchard Père & Fils in burgundy, William Fèvre in Chablis and Château de Poncié in Fleurie. In summer 2023 Artémis Domaines who bought Champagne Jaquesson a few years earlier, sold Champagne Henriot to Champagne’s largest cooperative group, Terroirs et Vignerons de Champagne (TEVC). Today Henriot farm 30 hectares of its own vineyards and works with growers for another 65 hectares of vineyards.

In autumn 2023 Cellar Master Alice Tetienne also takes on the new role of Deputy Managing Director, while Christophe Juarez, CEO of TEVC assumes the role of Managing Director at Champagne Henriot.

Laurent Fresnet: 2006 moved to champagne Mumm in 2020 – turned around the quality at the house and launched the 2008’s two years after his arrival to great acclaim. During his tenure the wines reached new heights.

Daniel Thibault: 1973 to 1976 at Champagne Henriot before moving to Charles Heidsieck.

Expert Reviews

95/100
Anne Krebiehl MW
“A gently scented nose promises a subtle wine. Air brings a distinct notion of red fruit, evocative of plum and candied cherry. The palate sweeps in with exquisite balance and a three-dimensionality that gives as much room to fruity heights and chalky depths. The mousse is elegant, creamy and carries beautiful length.”

Jancis Robinson MW
“Delicate and flirtatious. Gentle. Very successful though not that assertive on the nose.”

“Packed with fruit while hinting at mature toastiness, this wine is now in perfect balance. Its white fruits are from half-and-half Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, shot through with acidity while having a ripe character. Rich while also crisp, it is ready to drink.”

“Medium deep golden colour with a gentle mousseux. Ripe nose with some development, autolytic brioche, butter notes with red berries, ripe pear and pain d’épices notes, rather Pinot it feels. Dense palate, ample with layers of fruit like raspberry, pear, mild spices, ginger, clove and a creamy mousse, very vibrant freshness giving a lift to the unctuous fruit with a very long and balanced finish. ”

“Biscuity with a hint of marmite. Crisp, dry, layered and spicy. Toasted brioche finish with good length.”

“There is ample petrol character to the cool, pure and beautifully fresh nose that combines notes of citrus and yeast with those of green apple and a whiff of pain grillé. I really like the sense of tension and energy to the intense, delineated and solidly complex flavors that are supported by a firm and reasonably fine effervescence before culminating in a very dry, highly complex and superbly persistent finish. The outstanding 2008 vintage in Champagne can count another winner as this is a wine to buy and age in quantity. Note that while this could certainly be enjoyed now, I would continue to hold it for another 2 to 5 years.”

“Henriot's 2008 Brut Millésimé spent eight years sur lattes before disgorgement with six grams per liter dosage and is a blend of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wine displays a gently reductive nose with notes of citrus and stone fruit mingling with suggestions of freshly baked bread, oyster shell and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a voluminous but notably fine mousse, bright acids and an elegantly chalky finish that's delicate but penetrating. This is a comparatively supple, open-knit example of the taut 2008 vintage, but I suspect it will gain appreciably with bottle age.”
