Jacquesson Avize Champ Cain 2009

Jacquesson Avize Champ Cain 2009 - No Gift Box
The house was founded in 1798 by Memmie Jacquesson. Jacquesson is small producer based in Dizy, Champagne. Only Champagne Salon is smaller of the elite houses. Production is around 280,000 bottles per annum and are made with 78% of grapes from their own 28 hectare estate, the rest is bought in from growers. The 28ha domaine comprises 11ha in Avize and Oiry, some 13ha spread over Aÿ, Hautvillers, Dizy and Mareuil-su-Aÿ and a further 4ha in the Vallée de l'Ardre (a tributary of the Vesle, north-west of the Marne). Current owners, brothers, Jean-Hervé and Laurent Chiquet recently changed methods to be organic, almost all Jacquesson wines ferment in old, large-sized oak barrels, which yield little wood aroma to the wine.

Avize is situated at the bottom of the slope facing due south; with calcareous soil of clayey, sandy, silty structure over blocks of Campanian chalk. Planted to Chardonnay with 12,000 vines over 1.3 hectares in 1962. Fermented in large oak casks and rested on the lees until it was bottled on 18th May 2009. Chablis pruning is employed alongside traditional growing techniques, with little or no soil enrichment whilst most treatments are organic. Harvest was carried out by hand on the 18th of September.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes.

Production is around 280,000 bottles per annumm and are made with 78% of grapes from their own 28 hectare estate, the rest is bought in from growers they know well. In January 2023 Champagne Jacquesson was bought by the wine company Artémis Domaines owned by François Pinault, French billionaire businessman currently ranked the sixth richest person in Europe.

Previous owners, brothers, Jean-Hervé and Laurent Chiquet place a huge emphasis on the quality of the vineyards. Recently methods have changed to be organic, almost all Jacquesson wines ferment in old, large-sized oak barrels, which yield little wood aroma to the wine. Instead of being limited to labelling their non vintage champagnes NV, Jacquesson have decided to change the name of their cuvée every year. The first cuvée under this new concept was 740, created from an internal bookkeeping system.

“The 2009 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Avize - Champ Caïn is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, blanched almonds, freshly baked bread and mandarin. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise, it's elegant and refined, with a pinpoint mousse, discreet depth at the core and a long, chalky finish. Beautifully balanced with minimal dosage, it shows the results the Jacquesson brothers' viticulture were already delivering over a decade ago.”

“This wine comes from the 1.3ha Champ Caïn plot in Avize, planted in 1962. The colour is deep lemon gold. The sumptuously soft nose has lovely creamy-toasty layers adding complexity to the fruit. The ripe fruit is sweet in style, even tropical, with pineapple, apple jam and pear tart. The oakiness is well blended in the rich fruitiness, not masking anything. The age comes across more on the palate, which feels a little too dry with its tiny dosage cutting the finish short, bringing a degree of austerity. Still a glorious, vinous and concentrated Champagne at the perfect drinking age. Disgorged 6/19; dosage 1.5g/l”
