Jacquesson Cuvee 743 NV Magnum

Jacquesson Cuvee 743 NV - No Gift Box
The house was founded in 1798 by Memmie Jacquesson. Jacquesson is small producer based in Dizy, just a short distance north east of Epernay. Production is around 280,000 bottles per annum and are made with 78% of grapes from their own 28 hectare estate, the rest is bought in from growers. The 28ha estate comprises 11ha in Avize and Oiry, some 13ha spread over Aÿ, Hautvillers, Dizy and Mareuil-su-Aÿ and a further 4ha in the Vallée de l'Ardre (a tributary of the Vesle, north-west of the Marne). In 1990 brothers Jean-Hervé and Laurent Chiquet took over running the family business from their father and they soon started the transition to organic farming. The Jacquesson wines are typically fermented in old, large-sized oak foudre, though that yields little wood character to the wine. In 2022 the Chiquet brothers sold to Artémis Group, the investment company of the Pinault family; a group that operate across the broad spectrum of the luxury goods and services sector, owning brands like Christies, Puma, Ch. Latour and many more premium brands.

In recognition of the subtle differences between each annual non-vintage creation, Champagne Jacquesson number their non-vintage cuvée every year. Jacquesson Cuvée 743 is based on the 2015 harvest with grapes originating from Ay, Dizy, Hautvillers, Avize and Oiry. The Pinot Noir from Ay and Dizy and the Chardonnays from Avize were particularly successful in 2015. The base harvest is complemented by the addition of 20% reserve wines from the previous two years. The champagne was vinified on the lees in oak barrels with no filtration or fining. 222,044 bottles, 9,902 magnums and 300 jeroboams were produced.

Weather: A wet winter and mild spring gave way to an exceptionally dry summer from mid-May onwards. Hot weather prevailed until mid-August, when the skies opened again. Rains gave way to fine, cool, yet sunny weather for the first two weeks of harvest, which commenced on August 29th. The 2015 vintage has a lot of common denominators with the 2003 vintage but the 2015's are showing a better balance of weight and freshness with their average potential alcohol level of 10.5% and total acidity of 6.9 g. An average vintage where a few will excel.

The house was founded in 1798 by Memmie Jacquesson. Jacquesson is small producer based in Dizy, Champagne. Only Champagne Salon is smaller of the elite houses. Production is around 280,000 bottles per annumm and are made with 78% of grapes from their own 28 hectare estate, the rest is bought in from growers they know well. The 28ha domaine comprises 11ha in Avize and Oiry, some 13ha spread over Aÿ, Hautvillers, Dizy and Mareuil-su-Aÿ and a further 4ha in the Vallée de l'Ardre (a tributary of the Vesle, north-west of the Marne).

In January 2023 Champagne Jacquesson was bought by the wine company Artémis Domaines owned by François Pinault, French billionaire businessman currently ranked the sixth richest person in Europe.

Previous owners, brothers, Jean-Hervé and Laurent Chiquet place a huge emphasis on the quality of the vineyards. Recently methods have changed to be organic, almost all Jacquesson wines ferment in old, large-sized oak barrels, which yield little wood aroma to the wine. Instead of being limited to labelling their non vintage champagnes NV, Jacquesson have decided to change the name of their cuvée every year. The first cuvée under this new concept was 740, created from an internal bookkeeping system.

Antonio Galloni
“The NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 743 (2015 base) is soft, open-knit and caressing. The natural radiance of 2015 comes through in the wine's ample, creamy feel. Apricot, spice, dried flowers, hazelnut and lightly honeyed notes are all beautifully laced together. The 743 is already a touch forward, in a good way, which makes it a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years.”

William Kelley
“Based on the 2015 vintage and disgorged in August 2019 without dosage, the Chiquet brothers' NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 743 is showing nicely, offering up inviting aromas of freshly baked bread, crisp yellow orchard fruit, beeswax and dried white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise, it's elegantly fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit, a pinpoint mousse and a nicely defined, saline finish.”

Roger Voss
“Aged in wood, this is the latest iteration of the producer’s non-vintage cuvée based on the 2015 vintage It is impressive in its white-fruit richness that is perfectly balanced by intense acidity. Bottle ageing has added to the Champagne’s complexity. This is a fine wine that is ready to drink.”

Peter Moser
“Medium yellow-green, silver reflections; fine mousse. Ripe yellow apple fruit, a whisper of meadow herbs, nuances of lime zest, a little sea salt, delicate nashi pear. tight-knit, fine white stone fruit nuances, racy style, salty, mineral-citrus finish. A crisp aperitif with good development potential. (Base 2015, Deg. 12/2019).”
