Champagne Krug Overview
+
The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne.

Krug ID: 105095 | Whilst bottles of Krug 1995 do not have a Krug ID on the back label, you can use the code on the left to discover the story of this vintage. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The 1995 harvest was a large crop and shared similar characteristics with the renowned 1998. Following four consecutive years of tough growing conditions, 1995 came as a huge relief to the region - the first universally declared vintage since 1990. The summer was mainly hot, with some showers a few weeks before the harvest. Now, over twenty years since bottling, champagne from 1995 are starting to show flavours of incredibly complex, rich and concentrated fruits.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 48% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 17% Pinot Meunier
Drink: 2012-2025

Tasting Note: Pale straw colour with a firm, vegetal nose and a hint of lemon cream. This is a tightly wound champagne, loaded with brioche, toasted oak, lemon rind and flowers. The mousse is extremely fine and the style decidedly more linear and fresh than the 1996. This is all on the finish, like some great white Burgundies.. although medium-bodied, this appears to be built for extended cellaring. Still incredibly youthful for a champagne of such age.

“I am allocating slightly fewer marks here than for example to the 90, to be sure, but a more classical Krug still feels positive after the monstruous giants of 89 and 90. The most striking thing about it is the razorsharp acid that guarantees an extremely long life. Probably the most long-lived of all the 95's in Champagne. At present the acid has the same efficacy as a fantastic breeze of bracing alpine air. The complexity and elegance are unmistakeable. Most strongly reminiscent of Bollinger's fabulous 95, but somewhat harder at the present stage.”

“Krug's 1995 Vintage continues to grow in bottle. It showed fabulous focus and definition in a vibrant, refreshing style that was perfect with hors d'oeuvres. Surprisingly, the 1995 remains one of the more under the radar recent released from Krug.”

“A beautiful Krug, balanced to perfection. The nose is a seductive blend of toastiness, ripe sweet fruitiness, aromatic wood, apricots and perfume. Rich and oily mouth-feel with impeccably well-integrated acidic backbone. Superb now but it is still climbing toward its peak.”

“Pale straw. Rather languid bead. Firm, almost vegetal nose with just a hint of lemon cream. Dense and tight knit. Uncompromisngly dry and still pretty tight. Very long. It's all on the finish, like some great white burgundies. Wonderfully long. But I would still ideally wait for this to unwind further. It is slowly opening out from the tense state in which it was released...”

“Light yellow. Rich and powerful, with leesy pear and white truffle aromas accented by gentle notes of white pepper and cinnamon. Extremely powerful Krug, with rich orchard fruit flavors, a velvety texture and warm, rich, inviting notes of brioche and creme brulee Finishes with intense pear and peach flavors and lingering notes of smoke, iodine and toffee. One of the most concentrated Champagnes I tried this year.”

“A very youthful '95. Delicate. Intense aromas of ginger, citrus, candied berry and multigrain bread turn to honey, roasted almonds and graphite on the palate. It's all underscored by creamy texture and a precise structure that keeps it persistent through the long finish. A picture of precision and intensity. Drink now through 2025.”
