Description & Technical Information
-
The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne.

Krug ID: 407001 | Whilst bottles of Krug 1996 do not have a Krug ID on the back label, you can use the code on the left to discover the story of this vintage. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: A year like no other, 1996 in Champagne married the highest levels of sugar and acidity in living memory; the resulting wines are extraordinary in their concentration, yet perfectly poised in terms of structural definition. The year 1996 is to become a year that will go down in Champagne’s history books.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: Predominately Premier & Grand Cru
Grape Varieties: 48% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Noir, 21% Pinot Meunier
Drink: Now to 2030

Tasting Note: A seductive golden colour and a surprisingly forward nose which marries honey, acacia, brioche and truffle. It is on the palate that the identity of the year really starts to sing, with rich notes of lemon meringue, hazelnut and blackcurrant shining through. Beneath this the ripe fruit is slumbering; its ultimate manifestation will herald unparalled complexity and profundity. Similar to the '88 but many suspect it will, over time, be even better.

“ID 407001. Disgorged autumn 2007. 48% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier from 17 villages. Known as ‘extreme and charismatic’. Contrary to what people believe, 1996 was not an easy vintage: to deal with this extreme freshness is always a challenge. Harvest took place between 20 September and 30 September.
Tasted blind. Deep orangey apricot colour with a sluggish bead. Fully mature nose with notes of dried apricots and nuts. Wholly enveloping pleasure on the nose! Hint of caramel and also something very exotic indeed. Something you wouldn’t find in any other champagne, surely. Dry, clean finish. ”

“This is a handsome yellow-gold colour with hints of bronze. Still fresh and vigorous yet with a ripe acidity. Wow, this is something else in the mouth! There is a lot going on – firm and tight one moment, then a panoply of sensuous flavours. Williams pears and glace à l’orange evolve into lemon and prunes. A splendid finale of great length and vigour demonstrates that this ’96 still has years of life ahead of it.”

“ID 407001. 42% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 26% Pinot Meunier.
Deep golden straw. Less intense nose than the Grande Cuvée ID 313054. Edge of bread dough. Firm with masses of acidity. Quite demanding. The acidity of the year dominates this wine for the moment. Very dry impression. Almost austere. I would age this wine longer to allow it to soften a bit. Very much less flattering than the Grande Cuvée based on 2006 tasted alongside. 12%”

“A beast of a champagne. Brisk acidity, juicy palate, massive fruitiness. Super toasty, coffee, cardamom and vanilla nose with rich, ripe, overwhelming red fruit character. The oak is not yet fully integrated to the whole. Monumental in every sense and starting to come around.”

“This harmonious Champagne offers luxurious texture and powerful, focused acidity, showing aromatic accents of spring blossom, crushed thyme and chai, with rich notes of lemon meringue, hazelnut, black currant and fresh porcini mushroom. The full package. Impressive”

“The 1996 Krug Vintage remains one of the greatest Champagnes ever made. It is also far less expensive than either the Clos du Mesnil or Clos d'Ambonnay but equally as delicious. This bottle is stratospheric, with layers of explosive fruit that flow effortlessly to the multi-dimensional, captivating finish. It is another eternal Champagne from Krug.”

“Quite a bit of development on the nose of this bottle and then notable 1996 acidity on the finish. Just a slight lack of weight in the middle and a very dry finish.”

“A powerful, majestic Champagne. Deep and compelling, with aromas of whole-grain toast, coconut and dried citrus that draw you in. Lean and racy on the palate, with a creaminess that’s yet to be integrated. A classic 1996, with ripe, exotic aromas and a steely structure. This is still a baby, with the long, resonant finish confirming its potential. Best from 2009 through 2040.”
