Description & Technical Information
-
The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne. After thirteen years ageing in the cellars, Krug 2002 in magnum was finally released in 2021

Krug ID: 414071 | Each bottle of Krug has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The 2002 vintage shaped up magnificently over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. This helped create a harvest at Krug that was marked by great homogeneity and superb balance. The vintage has been named "Ode to Nature" to express the music of an extremely serene and generous year, generally considered one of the best harvests in the last two decades.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: Predominately Premier & Grand Cru | Pinot Noir: Ambonnay, Aÿ, Bouzy, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ | Chardonnay: Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Trépail, Villers-Marmery | Meunier: Coulommes-la-Montagne, Saint Gemme, Villevenard
Grape Varieties: 40% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, 21% Meunier
Ageing: 13 years on the lees
Disgorged: Autumn 2016
Drink: Now to 2030+

Tasting Note: Krug 2002 is extremely expressive from the opening, natural intensity and elegance that combines to create fruit aromas. A delicate and balanced fruit-forward palate that is emphasised through honey notes with hints of smoke and toast. As expected from such an excellent vintage, this has a long and lasting finish. There is no doubt this is the best Krug vintage you can buy and probably their best release in the last 25 years.

Jancis Robinson MW
“Tasted blind. Definitely more youthful with probably more potential than its pair (the 2004) but it's very tricky to guess the vintage. Hint of veginess and punch. Very long indeed. A real peacock’s tail on the finish. Impressive.”

“The much-anticipated 2002 has impeccable detail and depth with a lot of chalky, stony and flinty elements on the nose as well as a very fresh edge. The nose is very complex and wound up tight but presents itself as very integrated and compressed. There are aromas of lemon rind, lime juice and lime custard all at once, complemented in turn by a super-restrained hazelnut-like edge. Undertones of brown mushrooms, chalky minerals and lemon leaf. The palate has a core of sizzlingly intense, concentrated chardonnay framed within a powerful phenolic structure that will underpin the future of this Champagne. There's also plenty of acidity for the future and this will no doubt continue to evolve and blossom; it will be merely an act of refining its already impressive focus, linearity and magical finish. This is really a great, great vintage for Krug. Flawlessly fresh and as perfect as it gets. Give this time as it needs to settle: best from 2020 and then for another decade beyond.”

“Disgorged Autumn 2014. 40% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier. From Moët Hennessy UK.
Tasted blind. Pale gold. Oak and coconut. And masses of acidity. Very dry and Bollinger-esque? A bit uncompromising. Only one taster, Nick Baker of The Finest Bubble, guessed this wine as the lauded Krug 2002.”

“ID 415064. Great combination of freshness and density. Explosively powerful. Un-ignorable. Kerpow! Pungent.

“Powerful, sweet fruity, charred, buttery nose with immense depth. A mild oaky-spicy note floats over the opulent fruity burst. Wide and winey even oily palate, caressingly smooth-textured and voluptuous. Beautiful acid line and long, concentrated length. A classic, monumental keeper yet delivers a lot of pleasure already.”

“The character of the 2002 harvest exuberantly explodes in the glass with a lucent, pale-golden color and a bouquet of fresh fruit, hazelnut and slightly toasted almonds. All this on a cushion of tropical fruit, freshly cut pineapple, fresh ginger and red currant with a veil of linden honey in the finish. The mouthfeel is generous and full with charismatic intensity, vital tension and a vibrant richness of fruit which complement a lovely saline streak and an almost smoky hint. The finish has an exciting persistence, invigorated by an incessant and dynamic alternation of depth and acuteness. A Champagne with great energy that has only just begun to build a reputation.”

“A blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier from a warm, dry, generous, homogenous year, with 11 years' ageing on the lees.
This was tasted immediately after Krug 2003 and was so much more discreet and savoury than the 2003 on the nose. It is chock-full of acidity and life, is really muscular and much more intellectual. For the moment the 2002 is less obviously fruity than the 2003 - clearly a champagne for long ageing - like many other 2002s - but much more backward than any I can think of immediately. There is nothing in excess; a great example of the Krug art of assemblage. Very solid and concentrated but not heavy at all. The finish is notably dry. This may be an intellectual wine but it's certainly not hard work! For Julie Cavil of the Krug blending team, this wine is 'a racehorse'. 'You were still riding regularly then', winemaker Eric Lebel reminds her with a smile. For them '2002 is about the generosity of Nature. We had to work hard to limit the yield a bit. There was lots of richness in the base wines; each sample had great generosity'. I look forward very much to following the development of this exceptional wine.
Drink 2016-2030”

“ID: 414071, disgorged 4th quarter of 2014. Fine, multidimensional, focused aromatic nose with some toasty notes. Complex pear, peach and citrus flavours with lovely complexity. Real breadth but also some focus. It’s certainly very rich in style and a bit showy, with complex grapefruit, lemon, toast and hazelnut characters at its core. Showy but ultimately quite serious.”

Michael Edwards
“The Krug 2002 vintage Champagne is a mix of bright Welsh gold and pale green lights and has a perfect flow of tiny bubbles. What aromatics – spring flowers from well-sited Pinot Meunier, and exoticism in the Chardonnay. The beating heart of the wine is powerful, poised and very complex Pinot Noir, still biding its time to majestically unfold. Magnificent.”
