Champagne Krug Overview
The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne. After fourteen years ageing in the cellars, Krug 2002 was finally released in 2016.

Each bottle of Krug has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather The 2002 vintage shaped up magnificently over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. This helped create a harvest at Krug that was marked by great homogeneity and superb balance. The vintage has been named "Ode to Nature" to express the music of an extremely serene and generous year, generally considered one of the best harvests in the last two decades.

Each case contains:

Krug Grande Cuvée 158eme Edition NV
Tasting note: Exceptional freshness in the mouth is accompanied by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat and jellied fruit. Rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit are enhanced by the subtlety of the fine and elegant bubbles. This has tremendous power of fruit, brioche, backed apples, vanilla and spice and a length of flavour that goes on and on. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone's guess. The ultimate non-vintage.

Krug 2002
Tasting note: Krug 2002 is extremely expressive from the opening, natural intensity and elegance that combines to create fruit aromas. A delicate and balanced fruit-forward palate that is emphasised through honey notes with hints of smoke and toast. As expected from such an excellent vintage, this has a long and lasting finish. There is no doubt this is the best Krug vintage you can buy and probably their best release in the last 25 years.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002
Tasting note: A champagne that on the nose has hints of pear and orchard fruits, the palate is full of fresh citrus fruits and hints of toasty brioche. A very long lingering finish.

“Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002:
The 2002 Clos du Mesnil is wonderfully pliant and expressive in the glass. The radiant personality of the year comes through in the wine's ripe, tropically-leaning flavors and open-knit personality. I imagine the 2002 will develop at a relatively fast pace by Clos du Mesnil standards. Even so, there is more than enough freshness underpinning the fruit to support at least two decades of very fine drinking.”

“Krug 2002: This is perhaps the best bottle of Krug's 2002 Vintage I have tasted. Expansive and creamy on the palate, with lovely finesse and brightness, the 2002 is quite expressive today. I don't see the depth or pedigree that might place this wine among the best examples of the year. Instead, the 2002 Vintage continues to be an underwhelming wine by Krug standards.”

“Krug Grande Cuvée 158eme Edition NV: The NV Grande Cuvée 158 Edition, based on 2002, is terrific. Radiant, supple and super-inviting, the 158 is a super-expressive today. Apricot, peach, toast, chamomile, pastry and wild flowers all develop in the glass, but it is the wine's textural feel that is most remarkable.”

“Krug 2002: Code 414071. 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Meunier. Disgorged autumn 2014.
Tasted blind. Relatively vague, indistinct smudgy nose. But there is lots of evolution. Is this a relatively mature vintage wine? Long and well balanced. Very satisfying and extremely long. Is this vintage 2002? It does stand out. A favourite. ”

“Krug Grande Cuvée 158th Edition: ID 108001. 158th edition. Contains 76 different wines, including 10 vintages back to 1998.
Lift and delicacy on the nose. Vegy nose, great balance and very complex. Denser. Krug's Julie Cavil saw mint in Krug 2002 but I see it in this Grande Cuvée based on 2002 as the main ingredient. ”
