Description & Technical Information
Krug Trilogy Case 2003. This case includes one 75cl bottle each of Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 159 NV (based on 2003), Krug 2003 and Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003.

Weather: The 2003 vintage was a year of many circumstances: dry winter and spring, very premature blooming, two serious frosts and a summer of scorching heat. With small yields, healthy grapes, extremely varied levels of maturity and over and under-ripeness, it was Krug's respect of the individual expression of every plot that produced surprisingly fresh, aromatic and balanced wines. Krug decided to create a vintage for this particular year and named it "Vivacité Solaire" (Vivacious Radiance).

Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 159 NV | Krug ID: 211021
This is the 159th creation of Krug Grande Cuvée. Based on 2003, it is a blend of 120 wines from ten vintages: the oldest being 1988 and the youngest 2003. Reserve wines in this Edition - particularly those from 1996 and other truly great white wines from more recent years - give spark and vitality to the final assemblage. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone's guess. The ultimate non-vintage.

Krug 2003 | Krug ID: 113015
Expressive aromas of citrus, plum, honey and brioche lead the way towards flavours of fresh summer fruits and grapefruit along with candied peel, roast chestnut and apple tart. With fruit, freshness, balance, expressiveness, vivacity and finesse all at the same time, you may be surprised by Krug 2003.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 | Krug ID: 413064
A unique luminous pale gold colour with aromas of candied fruit and white truffle. It is immediately clear this has intense purity. On the palate flavours of citrus fruit, vanilla and herbs combine with a velvety texture and persistent finish. Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 is a very young wine and if cellared properly will develop elegantly for at least 30 years.

Each bottle of Krug has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Expert Reviews
Jancis Robinson MW
“Pale gold. Pungent nose. Very tight. Hint of putty on the nose. Opens out on the palate. Masses to chew on. Real concentration. Perfect for drinking now. Dry but complete. Intellectual and great balance. Very impressive.”
Tyson Stelzer
“Even in this bad-tempered vintage, the earth-shaking minerality of Krug’s single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil could not be dampened. It utterly trumps the phenolic grip of the season, which fades into complete oblivion. It wields a shining white citrus sabre that slices through its core with razor precision. This is not just the best Champagne of 2003, it is an entrancing wine by any standards, vintage aside.

“ID 215040. Made from the very small crop of 2003 back to 1988 from 120 wines. 51% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 19% Pinot Meunier.
Pale, pungent and smoky. Great undertow, and proof that they did not get rid of their heavy wines in the Grande Cuvée.
Drink 2014-2024”
Jamie Goode
“ID: 114002, which means this was disgorged in the first quarter of 2014. Tight, still, with bright acidity and some pithy notes. This is not what you’d expect from 2003. Distinctive toast and citrus, a bit of white peach and some hazelnut, with nice brightness. This is taut and direct with a crisp, somewhat clipped finish. ”
Jancis Robinson MW
“ID 314058. Less explosive on the nose than the Clos du Mesnil 1999 (tasted but not released because not deemed up to scratch) but with real presence on the palate. Lots to bite on. Neat and a little more obviously exuberant than the 2000 Clos du Mesnil tasted the previous evening. Certainly no shortage of acidity. And lots of potential to age.
Drink 2013-2025”
Essi Avellan MW
“Strong, oaky, charred, super intense nose showing beautiful evolution and yeasty and toasty depth. Really powerful with mild oxidative notes but backed up with plenty of acidity and vibrancy. Still very soft and overt for Clos du Mesnil. This is still youhful and the oak will get better integrated over time.”
Michael Edwards
“Beguiling complex colour of twinkling green/gold lights. Inimitably Krug, masterly blending. The Chardonnay scents are at once refined yet dripping in the aroma of crunchy Williams pears. Discreet notes of vanilla, crème pâtissière, spiced lemon and brioche. Then a mouthfeel of body and heft; great Pinot Noir that is miraculously filigreed and ethereal, plus Pinot Meunier succulence. Like no other Champagne.
