Krug Trilogy Case 2006. This case includes one 75cl bottle each of Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 162 NV (based on 2006), Krug 2006 and Krug Clos du Mesnil 2006.

Weather: The year 2006 was considered a hot one in Champagne, with extreme highs and 23 days recorded over 30°C. It was a capricious climate that went from dry periods to intense rainfall - in August, the equivalent of 2 months of rain fell in only 2 weeks. Fortunately, the sun returned to complete the ripening period, shining on a beautiful harvest. The grapes showed balance similar to that of the vintages of 2002 and 1989, which were also very generous years.

Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 162 NV | Krug ID: 214032
Light lemon freshness with bundles of dried apricot. Slight spice and orange peel taste. Big acidity but very light. The palate is all sherbet and lemon with red berries. Impressive champagne based on one of the best vintages of the century so far.

Krug 2006 | Krug ID: 118014
At first sight, the intense golden colour promises round generosity. A very expressive and indulgent nose reveals yellow and dried fruit, toasted almonds, hazelnut, maple syrup, meringue and mandarin liqueur. On the palate it is generous, deep, ample and fresh with aromatic persistence and a long finish. It has notes of nougat, frangipane, pastry, tarte tatin, plenty of citrus with a beautiful finish on pink grapefruit skin.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2006 | Krug ID: 416040
At first sight, a vibrant luminosity and intense golden colour redolent of ripe wheat. On the nose, expressive aromas of toffee apple, caramel, ripe citrus fruits and lightly toasted nuts. On the palate, it opens with astonishing generosity and breadth. Initial hints of brown sugar, candied ginger and pecan give way to notes of citrus fruits as it bursts into an explosion of freshness enhanced by a very long and elegant finish.

Each bottle of Krug has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

“ID 416037.
Very direct and flirtatious – this goes straight up the nose. Solid, fine and very firm, correct and well integrated.”

“Krug 2006 Vintage is bright, tense and full of energy. Lemon confit, pastry, chamomile, dried flowers and tangerine oil all race out of the glass. The breadth of the Pinot comes through on the mid-palate and finish, as the 2006 gains power and resonance with a bit of aeration. Light tropical inflections, along with hints of almond and spice, open up later, adding further shades of nuance. Although it has just been released, the 2006 is unusually open and a real pleasure to taste today. In most vintages, Krug demands cellaring, but in the 2006 readers will find a Krug Vintage that is superb, even in the early going.”

“This is the 162nd creation of Krug Grande Cuvée, code 214032, which is based on the 2006 vintage. The oldest wine is from 1990 and the youngest 2006, with 142 wines from 11 vintages. Reserve wines lend structure and depth to this season's harvest, which seemed to be somewhat too homogeneous. It is this year's wines of many plots from the villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Villers Mamery which proved the shine and minerality to the blend. 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 6 g/l. Disgorged spring 2014.
Tasted blind. Rich nose, really quite creamy and opulent on the nose. Very slight edge of decay, but in a nice way. A tad soft; relatively low acid. Slightly lazy bead. Medium persistence. ”

“The 2006 Clos du Mesnil was harvested over three days, which is remarkable for a tiny parcel measuring 1.84 hectares divided into five blocks that are often picked over a wider timeframe. Soaring in the glass, the 2006 is stratospheric in its beauty. The richness of the year contrasts so beautifully with the flintiness and energy of Mesnil. With time in the glass the mousse softens, releasing layers of vinous intensity. Tangerine oil, pastry, lemon confit and marzipan all build effortlessly. The 2006 is sumptuous, racy and exotic to the core, with all of that richness supported by a phenolic, intense frame. This is Krug ID: 319030.”

“ID 118014. To be released in October 2019. (With potential stress because the 2019 harvest is likely to be so late.) Saved by a fine August. This was assistant winemaker Julie Cavil’s first tasting of the still base wines and is therefore her first known vintage on the market! Chef de Caves Eric Lebel was ill that summer. Outstanding Pinot Noir.
Quite rich and polished. No hint of astringency. But zesty on top and with lots of undertow. (I’ve never heard anyone say of a Krug vintage that it shouldn’t have been released.) Long with a particularly rich finish.”
