Description & Technical Information

The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne. After 11 years ageing in the cellars, Krug 2008 has been released in 2021.

Krug ID: 419044 | Each bottle of Krug 2008 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: 2008 was one of Champagne’s coolest in 14 years, and also one of the region’s least sunny in almost half a century. It was a classic northern climate, one that has not been seen much since. Rainfall was normal, the summer was dry, and temperatures were constant throughout the growing season. This absence of extremes resulted in slow and steady grape maturation. Under these circumstances, the fruit was intense, elegant and beautifully structured. Heterogeneity in the vines brought great complexity, with a full spectrum flavours and aromas observed upon harvest.

Tasting Note: At first sight, an intense and brilliant golden hue. An expressive nose that is rich and ample with patinated aromas of honey, liquorice, menthol, orange peel and grapefruit. Vivacious, intense and harmonious with great tension on the palate, expressing notes of quince, candied fruits and citrus, yellow kiwi, star fruit, honey, apple tart, butter cookies, orange peel, peony and fennel, with floral and menthol undertones. It has a long, balanced and precise finish with astounding structure.

Expert Reviews
James Suckling
“Exceptional freshness with aromas of flinty white stones, flowers, almonds and lemons. There’s hazelnut and strawberry here, too. Complex. The palate has a long, powerful and smooth-honed feel with very assertive citrus flavors, driven by long acidity. A perfect 2008.”
Peter Moser
“Light golden yellow, silver reflections, fine, lively and persistent mousse. Initially fresh patisserie notes, biscuit and almonds, underlaid with acacia honey and flowers, fine nuances of candied lime zest, ripe cherries and oranges in the background, symphonic bouquet. Substantial texture that conveys great freshness, taut chalkiness combined with fruity acidity, appears young and streamlined, shows a powerful finish with enormous length, this classic beauty is what everyone has been waiting for. Champagne lovers were right to be pleased. Lively, complex and precise, carried by an unbelievable lightness and drinking pleasure. Champagne could not be better. ID.419044”
Anne Krebiehl MW
“The incredibly pristine, saline, sea breeze nose comes with a beguiling edge of bergamot. The palate displays Krug's signature savouriness with its salty depth so reminiscent of Japanese seaweed crackers and toasted sesame. These rich flavours are couched in creamiest mousse and framed by 2008's brisk freshness and sleek structure. What clarity, what luminosity. Wonderful - and will remain so for decades.”
Antonio Galloni
“The 2008 Vintage is a nervy, electrifying Champagne, the likes of which has not emerged from Krug's cellars since the magical 1996. Bright and sculpted, with tremendous precision, the 2008 dazzles from start to finish. Stylistically, the 2008 doesn't have the toastiness or explosive breadth often found in young Krug, but that in no way detracts from its magnificent beauty.”
Jancis Robinson MW
“Pale greenish coppery colour. Intense evolved nose. A certain nuttiness and lots of lime flavour. Masses of acidity still but real depth too. Light bitterness. Lack of flesh. Structure dominates the filling. Mineral, almost wet cement on nose! Very dry finish. This one should run and run. Extremely zesty.”
The Wine Spectator
“There’s a supernova of sensation with each sip of this powerful version, starting with the vivid streak of mouthwatering acidity that drives a rich panoply of ripe black currant, mandarin orange peel and grilled nut flavors, accented by hints of candied ginger, briny oyster shell, verbena and ground cardamom. This burns bright from start to finish, yet its fine integration and lovely, raw silk–like mousse pull it all together into a seamless, vibrant package. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Disgorged autumn 2019. Drink now through 2038.”
Yohan Castaing
“What a burst of fresh fruit on the nose! The aromatic freshness is evident from the first whiff, suffused with notes of citrus fruits including grapefruit, menthol, and a hint of liquorice. The texture has precise contours, giving an impression of rectangular rectitude and perfect balance. This is a finely chiselled Champagne offering great harmony and a long finish enhanced by delicious underlying notes of nutty bitterness. 53% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 22% Chardonnay. Disgorged in the first quarter of 2020. Dosage: 4.5g/L”
William Kelley
“Krug's 2008 Brut is slated to be released at the end of 2021, but any readers who purchase the wine will need to exercise considerably more patience if they are to enjoy it in its prime, as it is very tightly wound out of the gates. Unwinding in the glass with a youthfully discreet bouquet of clear honey, dried fruit, walnut oil, Meyer lemon and rock salt, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with a racy spine of acidity, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a penetrating, saline finish. The polar stylistic opposite of the rich, demonstrative 2006, the 2008 is a rather understated, taut vintage from Krug that isn't as liberally endowed with the house's characteristic toasty patina as its immediate predecessor.”

Essi Avellan MW
“Despite having been disgorged for a full two years, the slowly aging 2008 (Krug ID 419044) is still waiting to come around. Its nose comes with bitter almonds, yellow apple, dried flowers, honey and biscuits – not really the aromas you would expect from the cool year. The palate is viscous, yet tightly-knit and stylishly refreshed by the wine’s accentuated, steely acidity. It comes with the structure for ageing but the whole is still closed, deserving further time. ”
