Description & Technical Information
In 1991, just two years after Olivier joined Krug, a Clos surrounded by a protective wall since 1766 was found in Ambonnay, Krug's favourite village and largest source of Pinot Noir. The tiny 0.68-hectare site was purchased in 1994 and the first vintage was produced in 1995. Kept an absolute secret until its release in 2007, Olivier revealed: "We even kept it a secret from Moët for some years!" Clos d'Ambonnay is an extremely rare and exclusive champagne produced only in the very best vintages. Just 4,760 bottles of Clos d'Ambonnay were produced in 1998, each individually numbered.

Krug ID: 111002 | Each bottle of Krug Clos d'Ambonnay 1998 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The 1998 vintage was a classic year full of contrasts, typical in Champagne, with an extremely hot month of August followed by some heavy rains. In the case of Ambonnay, this resulted in astoundingly rich, delicious grapes that hinted at the wonderful potential of Krug’s 1998 Clos d'Ambonnay wines from the very first tasting sessions.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Pinot Noir | Clos d'Ambonnay
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Ageing: 12 years on the lees
Disgorged: Winter 2010/2011
Drink: Now to 2025

Tasting Note: An intense golden colour with hints of red tones. Amazing aromas of milky caramel, blackcurrant, red fruit jam and jellied fruits. On the palate, there are rich notes of wild fruits, brioche and redcurrant enhanced by an elegant long finish. At nearly twenty years of age, it is still shockingly fresh and lively with an elegant purity and immense power.

Krug Clos d'Ambonnay 1998 can also be purchased in a Limited Edition bottle signed by Olivier Krug and presented in a beautifully crafted and branded wooden box.

Expert Reviews
Antonio Galloni
“The 1998 Brut Clos d'Ambonnay appears to have arrived at an early plateau of maturity. Hints of white truffle, orange peel, licorice, honey and roasted almonds are woven together in a super-appealing mélange of aromas, flavors and textures”
Antonio Galloni
“Krug’s 1998 Clos d’Ambonnay is in a different league entirely, with far greater mid-palate richness and overall depth. This may be the best bottle of the 1998 Ambonnay I have had. Tonight, the 1998 is hauntingly beautiful.”
Allen Meadows
“(From a small walled .68 ha parcel this is the rarest of Krug's offerings that rests 12 years in the cellar before release). The pinot-based fruit underlying this wine is in evidence because while there isplenty of citrus, yeast and floral characters on the nose there are background hints of raspberry, strawberry and cherry nuances. There is clearly some age present on the complex, intense and vibrant flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel thanks to the very fine bead of the supporting mousse that is firm but not really exuberant, all wrapped in a lingering, cool and restrained finish. This really lovely effort is just knocking on the door of its peak though to my taste I would suggest holding for another 2 to 4 years first. That said it would not be a vinous crime to enjoy a bottle from time to time now.”
Wine Spectator
“A powerhouse, featuring well-sculpted acidity and rich mineral character, showing an overall sense of finesse, with a palatecaressing texture and beautifully layered flavors of crème de cassis, black cherry pâte de fruit, treacle, dried papaya, clover honey, fennel seed and ground spice, ringing out on the finish. Drink now through 2035.”
Tom Stevenson
“Hint of copper in the colour. The quintessence of Pinot Noir, so pure and bright. The toast-laden aromatic notes are just the beginning of this stellar Champagne's long and slow evolution. What more could even the fussiest champagne lover expect or demand from a blanc de noirs? Uniquely expressive; pure class!”
Jancis Robinson MW
“This is only the third release of this luxury wine. Really quite a dark coppery gold. Very big and bold on the nose. Heady, mushroomy, almost beery! Lovely fine, tiny bead. Like Clos du Mesnil, this has a bone-dry finish and is very forcibly real wine rather than evanescent champagne. Real vinosity; very different in build from other Krug wines.”
Tom Chadwick
“In the glass it has an almost pinkish hue. Great depth and rich aromas immediately let you know you are in for a real treat and what follows, if possible, is even better. Lurking in the background, wonderful and delicate fruit work in harmony showcasing the 'house' elegance and the Pinot adds a little extra depth. The finish is sublime and lingers and lingers. Balanced and singing in perfect tune. This was my first experience of Clos d'Ambonnay and it blew me away. Forget the price.....this is a profound and intellectual wine which leaves you asking one question. How do I get my hands on some? Forget the rather large price tag, if you love Champagne you have to have Clos d'Ambonnay.”
Essi Avellan MW
“Deep golden colour with a peachy hue. Layered nose that opens in the glass. Deep and multidimensional. Spice, wood, honey, burned sugar. Powerful on the palate, which shows oaky tones. Superbly fine mousse. Smooth, calm and concentrated. Big boy.”
