“(From a small walled .68 ha parcel this is the rarest of Krug's offerings that rests 12 years in the cellar before release). The pinot-based fruit underlying this wine is in evidence because while there isplenty of citrus, yeast and floral characters on the nose there are background hints of raspberry, strawberry and cherry nuances. There is clearly some age present on the complex, intense and vibrant flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel thanks to the very fine bead of the supporting mousse that is firm but not really exuberant, all wrapped in a lingering, cool and restrained finish. This really lovely effort is just knocking on the door of its peak though to my taste I would suggest holding for another 2 to 4 years first. That said it would not be a vinous crime to enjoy a bottle from time to time now.”

“This is only the third release of this luxury wine. Really quite a dark coppery gold. Very big and bold on the nose. Heady, mushroomy, almost beery! Lovely fine, tiny bead. Like Clos du Mesnil, this has a bone-dry finish and is very forcibly real wine rather than evanescent champagne. Real vinosity; very different in build from other Krug wines.”

“In the glass it has an almost pinkish hue. Great depth and rich aromas immediately let you know you are in for a real treat and what follows, if possible, is even better. Lurking in the background, wonderful and delicate fruit work in harmony showcasing the 'house' elegance and the Pinot adds a little extra depth. The finish is sublime and lingers and lingers. Balanced and singing in perfect tune. This was my first experience of Clos d'Ambonnay and it blew me away. Forget the price.....this is a profound and intellectual wine which leaves you asking one question. How do I get my hands on some? Forget the rather large price tag, if you love Champagne you have to have Clos d'Ambonnay.”

Krug Appoints New Chef de Cave

Champagne Krug have announced that Julie Cavil will take over as winemaking director in the new year. Incumbent winemaking director Eric Lebel will become deputy director of Krug and will lead projects involving all of the brands within the Moët Hennessy portfolio. -
