Champagne Krug Overview
+
In 1991, just two years after Olivier joined Krug, a Clos surrounded by a protective wall since 1766 was found in Ambonnay, Krug's favourite village and largest source of Pinot Noir. The tiny 0.68-hectare site was purchased in 1994 and the first vintage was produced in 1995. Kept an absolute secret until its release in 2007, Olivier revealed: "We even kept it a secret from Moët for some years!" Clos d'Ambonnay is an extremely rare and exclusive champagne produced only in the very best vintages. Just 5,158 bottles of Clos d'Ambonnay were produced in 2000, each individually numbered.

Krug ID: 413063 | Each bottle of Krug Clos d'Ambonnay 2000 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The 2000 vintage was once hot, rainy and stormy. The harvest at Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay took place in one day on September 29th: it was superbly bountiful with astoundingly rich Pinot Noir grapes.

Tasting Note: A particularly luminous straw-gold colour with a fine stream of bubbles throughout. Its aromas are full of brioche, caramel and spices, leading to a palate rife with freshness combined with flavours of caramel and hints of lemon. This latest release of Clos d’Ambonnay has fulfilled the potential of the grapes from the harvest and is exceptional in taste and ageing potential.

“ID 413063. Bottle number 1008 disgorged in 2013. When this was made, it was still an experiment. The 1995 was the first vintage but it had still not been released. This 2000 was released in early 2015.
Deep gold. Very deep-flavoured - chestnuts? - on the nose. Extremely persistent. Massive dimension; the bubbles almost seemed to struggle to escape. Still remarkably fresh with masses of aromatic development. Big, bold and bright.”
