Description & Technical Information

Clos du Mesnil is the most famous vineyard in all of Champagne and one of the finest Chardonnay sites outside the Grand Cru of Burgundy itself. In the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the vines were planted and the protective wall built in 1698. Although Krug purchased the plot in 1971, it wasn't until the outstanding 1979 harvest that Olivier's father suggested they make a single wine: from one grape, one year and one little garden. Based on pure chalk, this tiny 1.84-hectare east-facing plot achieves less ripeness than some of Le Mesnil's south-facing slopes, making it all the more suited to Krug's long-ageing style. Clos du Mesnil is an extremely rare and exclusive champagne produced only in the very best vintages. Just 11,390 bottles of Clos du Mesnil were produced in 2000, each individually numbered.

Krug ID: 315056 | Each bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: Before the harvest, a hailstorm devastated a large part of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Situated in the heart of the village, Krug’s Clos du Mesnil resisted better than the other plots as its vines are protected by the surrounding walls and village. Delicious, generous, ripe grapes survived the storm to provide an opulent and elegant Chardonnay.

Tasting Note: The colour is very light gold with hints of green. This has aromas of ripe apple, toffee, raisins and honey. The palate is extremely complex with indulgent flavours of peaches, gingerbread and truffles. Krug calls Clos du Mesnil 2000 'the miracle wine' after a hailstorm destroyed half the vineyard: the fruit that survived escaped with remarkable endurance and is still fresh at 15 years of age.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 is presented in a beautifully branded wooden gift box (as shown in the bottom left picture).

“At first, this exhibited alluring tropical passion fruit notes. But five years ago, it was transformed into a more honed and classical Clos du Mesnil. Now, it is even more beautiful, having developed buttery, almost fudge-scented notes which complement the stunning acidity.

“Originally released in 2012 but this bottling was not from the first release.
Much tighter, fresher and leaner than the Clos d'Ambonnay 2000 once served in a decent champagne glass. Very complex and serious on the nose. Brightly fruited and finely etched. Thrilling tension. This wine was originally served in wide burgundy bowls and these made the wine taste much broader and more developed than the Clos d'Ambonnay 2000.”

“This wine has been on a consistent rise ever since its launch. It has taken some time for the reserved tightness to vanish but now the wine is already showing plenty of what is to come. It impresses from the first sniff onwards until its super long and intense ending. There is a searing acid line beneath ripe fruity opulence leading to a dry mineral finish. The oaky notes are now perfectly harmonized to the generous, honey and fudge toned fruitness. The wine comes together so beautifully at the end. Still holding back plenty so hold on to the bottles you have. A grand Clos du Mesnil.”

“Silky and fine like featherweight cashmere, this vibrant blanc de blancs is nonetheless laden with ample, expressive flavors. Rich hints of XO cognac and coffee liqueur underscore bergamot and glazed apricot fruit, while smoky minerality, spun honey, grilled nut and exotic spices impart further complexity and linger on the lasting finish. Disgorged spring 2012. Drink now through 2030. ”

“There is no fingerprint of place more pronounced than the mineral voice of the soil that resonates in the most distinctive champagnes. In all Champagne I have not tasted a wine of such earth-shaking minerality as Clos du Mesnil 2000. It rumbles to the very core of the earth deep below the mesmerising site, then rises on the finish, like a shard of pure chalk erupting from the surface of the Clos itself.”

“A vibrant and expressive version, showing a pleasing tension to the interplay of mouthwatering acidity and fleur de sel-tinged minerality, with fine layers of poached quince, peach skin, ground coffee, toasted hazelnut, clover honey and cumin flavors. Spice and mineral notes ring out on the finish. Drink now through 2030.”

“Vibrant yellow-gold. Smoke- and mineral-accented pear and Meyer lemon on the deeply scented nose, with notes of ginger, vanilla bean and white flowers adding complexity and lift. Sappy, deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit flavors are braced by juicy acidity, picking up sweet butter and anise nuances with air. Chewy and mineral-driven, with superb clarity and slow-building spiciness. An exotic touch of iodine emerges on the finish, which shows outstanding focus and toasty persistence. The combination of power and energy here is really impressive.”

“Krug's 2000 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil keeps getting better and better. The flavors are starting to develop lovely layers of complexity, while the wine is also fleshing out a bit, releasing gorgeous layers of texture. Lemon oil, jasmine, white flowers, almonds and spices wrap around the deep, resonant finish in a striking Clos du Mesnil with a bright, bright future. This was bottle N. 6617.”

“There was no heatwave in 2000 but overall the summer was quite warm. This will be the next Clos du Mesnil to be released, but actually I found it a little more generous on the palate than the 1998, even if less developed on the nose. More discreet nose but impressively introvert. Broad on the palate but still very dry on the finish. Austere at the moment but very promising.”
