Champagne Krug Overview
+
Clos du Mesnil is the most famous vineyard in all of Champagne and one of the finest Chardonnay sites outside the Grand Cru of Burgundy itself. In the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the vines were planted and the protective wall built in 1698. Although Krug purchased the plot in 1971, it wasn't until the outstanding 1979 harvest that Olivier's father suggested they make a single wine: from one grape, one year and one little garden. Based on pure chalk, this tiny 1.84-hectare east-facing plot achieves less ripeness than some of Le Mesnil's south-facing slopes, making it all the more suited to Krug's long-ageing style. Clos du Mesnil is an extremely rare and exclusive champagne produced only in the very best vintages. Just 13,278 bottles and 500 magnums of Clos du Mesnil were produced in 2002, each individually numbered.

Krug ID: 115024 | Each bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The year 2002 offered a clement and generous climate, consistently warm, relatively dry, granting ideal conditions for grape maturation. As the grapes arrived at the press, they were in excellent and robust health. Clos du Mesnil’s harvest took place between the 15th and 17th of September and gave birth to fruity, energetic, delicate and well-balanced wines. Generally considered one of the best harvests in the last two decades.

Tasting Note: The 2002 vintage needs no introduction, but this expression is in a league of its own. Astounding powerful, its like a fruit salad bowl with hints of vanilla. Elegant and stunning all at once, it has a beautifully rich mouth-feel that lingers on and on. Great acidity and years of potential. Rich, elegant, precise and pure, this is just wow.

“Very lively, taut and willowy. Very long and lean and vital. Sort of electric energy. Blackcurrant-leaf flavours.
Drink 2018-2030”

“The 2002 Clos du Mesnil is wonderfully pliant and expressive in the glass. The radiant personality of the year comes through in the wine's ripe, tropically-leaning flavors and open-knit personality. I imagine the 2002 will develop at a relatively fast pace by Clos du Mesnil standards. Even so, there is more than enough freshness underpinning the fruit to support at least two decades of very fine drinking.”

“The 2002 Clos du Mesnil is brilliant right out of the gate. Vibrant, focused and crystalline, the 2002 hits all the right notes. Lemon peel, grapefruit, slate and white flowers give the 2002 its high-toned personality. The ripeness of the vintage has softened some of the typically angular young Clos du Mesnil contours. Best of all the 2002 is a rare Clos du Mesnil that drinks well right out of the gate, even if it will surely be more complex with more time in bottle. The 2002 has been absolutely stellar on both occasions I have tasted it so far. The 2002 was vinified by Nicolas Audebert, who is now making the wines at Rauzan-Ségla and Canon.”
