Description & Technical Information

Clos du Mesnil is the most famous vineyard in all of Champagne and one of the finest Chardonnay sites outside the Grand Cru of Burgundy itself. In the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the vines were planted and the protective wall built in 1698. Although Krug purchased the plot in 1971, it wasn't until the outstanding 1979 harvest that Olivier's father suggested they make a single wine: from one grape, one year and one little garden. Based on pure chalk, this tiny 1.84-hectare east-facing plot achieves less ripeness than some of Le Mesnil's south-facing slopes, making it all the more suited to Krug's long-ageing style. Clos du Mesnil is an extremely rare and exclusive champagne produced only in the very best vintages. Just 8,671 bottles and 659 magnums of Clos du Mesnil were produced in 2003, each individually numbered.

Krug ID: 413064 | Each bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: The 2003 vintage stands out for its dramatic climate of extremes: a very dry winter and spring with an early flowering period and also two strong frosts, then followed by a very warm summer. As a consequence, there was a relatively low yield in Krug’s Clos du Mesnil vineyard and the Chardonnay grapes harvested glowed with a rare health and beauty.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru | Clos du Mesnil
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Ageing: 10 years on the lees
Drink: Now to 2034

Tasting Note: A unique luminous pale gold colour with aromas of candied fruit and white truffle. It is immediately clear this has intense purity. On the palate flavours of citrus fruit, vanilla and herbs combine with a velvety texture and persistent finish. Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 is a very young wine and if cellared properly will develop elegantly for at least 30 years.

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 is presented in a beautifully branded wooden gift box (as shown in the bottom left picture).

“Even in this bad-tempered vintage, the earth-shaking minerality of Krug’s single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil could not be dampened. It utterly trumps the phenolic grip of the season, which fades into complete oblivion. It wields a shining white citrus sabre that slices through its core with razor precision. This is not just the best Champagne of 2003, it is an entrancing wine by any standards, vintage aside.

“ID 314058. Less explosive on the nose than the Clos du Mesnil 1999 (tasted but not released because not deemed up to scratch) but with real presence on the palate. Lots to bite on. Neat and a little more obviously exuberant than the 2000 Clos du Mesnil tasted the previous evening. Certainly no shortage of acidity. And lots of potential to age.
Drink 2013-2025”

“Strong, oaky, charred, super intense nose showing beautiful evolution and yeasty and toasty depth. Really powerful with mild oxidative notes but backed up with plenty of acidity and vibrancy. Still very soft and overt for Clos du Mesnil. This is still youhful and the oak will get better integrated over time.”

“Incredibly fresh and vibrant, this stunning Champagne weaves a tightly knit skein of ripe pear and tangy yellow plum fruit flavors together, with accents of rich pastry cream, toasted brioche, elderflower, ground cardamom and coffee liqueur. Shows a beautiful texture. A thread of salinity winds through to the lasting finish. Disgorged fall 2013. Drink now through 2029.”

“The 2003 Clos du Mesnil is insanely beautiful. Vivid, resonant and textured in the glass, the 2003 boasts magnificent depth and pure breed. Since I last tasted it a few months ago, the 2003 has begun to shut down, which is probably a great sign for its future and overall longevity. Hints of smoke, slate and dried pear gradually open up in the glass, but the 2003 mostly stands out for its exceptional finesse.”

“2003 was especially difficult in Mesnil, because the frost in early April halved the crop. 8,671 bottles and 659 magnums were made. Harvested 27 and 29 August. Really impressive nose -- very broad, creamy, and flinty, with a little bit of reductiveness combining with a smoky flavour and a lovely dairy yoghurt character. Dry and savoury, fabulous length and intensity on the palate. The reputation of this cuvée is deserved in the sense of the sheer quality of flavours and the massive depth on display. It doesn’t seem clumsy in the way that some 2003s do --but it isn’t doesn't have the defining acidity of, say, Salon 2002. In fact it is quite soft. The real attraction, though, is the range and power of the nose.”
