Description & Technical Information
-
One of only three vintages (1988, 1989, 1990) to be held back in Krug’s cellars after the original release, this champagne is powerful, elegant and distinctive. Krug Collection bottles are regularly tasted and appraised by Krug Cellar Master, Eric Lebel, until deemed to have blossomed into an outstanding new facet of this Champagne. Krug Vintage will then receive its cork and become Krug Collection. Each collection bottle is individually numbered, only 6586 bottles were kept for this late release.

Krug ID: 215026 | Each bottle of Krug has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Weather: There was frost damage in April but the vintage was made by the long, hot and dry summer. The crop was the third largest on record and the wines had excellent alcohol and acidity levels. The ripest wines since 1959 are showcased by the depth and finesse of the champagnes. Champagnes from 1990 are now very scarce.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 40% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 23% Pinot Meunier
Ageing: 24 years on the lees
Disgorged: Spring 2015
Alcohol: 12%
Drink: Now to 2032

Tasting Note: A deep golden tone showcasing the sunshine and generosity of the year. On the nose toasty and brioche aromas mix with almonds and ripe orchard fruits. The palate is complex and beautifully evolved but with abundance of freshness from a Champagne that has spent 25 years on the lees ageing. There are spices, caramelised notes and citrus with a large emphasis of candied oranges. The long finish is exceptional with honey and toasted notes shining through.

“Krug's just-released 1990 Collection is magnificent. Remarkably fresh for a 26 year-old wine, the 1990 Collection captures the Krug house style at its very best. Floral notes meld into hints of apricot, chamomile, orchard fruit, vanillin and sweet spices. On the palate, the 1990 is creamy, vivid and super-expressive, but what is most intriguing is how fresh the Collection is relative to Vintage Champagne, which has always been a heavier, more oxidative wine. Readers who can find the 1990 should not hesitate, as it is stellar.”

“ID 314056. Disgorged summer 2014. Second release. 40% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 23% Pinot Meunier. The weather in 1990 was somehow classic: a very mild winter with no snow, followed by sharp frosts in early April and a spell of lighter frosts later in the month. Now over 25 years in the cellar. Just 6,586 bottles were kept in the cellars and each is individually numbered.
Tasted blind. Pale bronze. Lots of magnificent decay here on the nose. Relatively rich with low acid. Broad and very fully evolved. Rather sweet. 1989? Not that fresh overall – perhaps a badly stored bottle?”
