Description & Technical Information

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug's philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may have reached twenty years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance: something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle and its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars: the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage. Krug buy Pinot Meunier grapes from two petit crus; the Cote de Bar in the warmest part of champagne nearer Burgundy than Reims and also from the village of Sainte-Gemme because of their intense fruit expression and freshness they bring to the blend.

This is the 164th creation of Krug Grande Cuvée and the second release to display the Edition on the label. Based on 2008, it is a blend of 127 wines from eleven vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2008. The 2008 vintage has produced wines of tight structure, so purity of fruit and strong underlying acidity will likely give the wines huge ageing potential. Because this vintage has such a strong personality, the amount of reserve wines in the 164th Edition is higher than normal.

Krug ID: 414076 | Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée NV has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Tasting Note: Exceptional freshness in the mouth is accompanied by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat and jellied fruit. Rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit are enhanced by the subtlety of the fine and elegant bubbles. This has tremendous power of fruit, brioche, backed apples, vanilla and spice and a length of flavour that goes on and on. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone's guess. The ultimate non-vintage.

“Based on 2008. Very dense mouthful with a significantly dry finish. Decidedly intellectual rather than a wine for glugging.
Drink 2017-2025”

“By Krug's endlessly patient precepts, this is still a baby. The base is 2008, a great year that needs a lot more time for the assembled reserve wines to bring balance and maturity. Today, the wine is very linear, brisk, fresh and invigorating, but some way from its peak. Worth keeping for at least another decade.”

“Tasted blind. Strange coconut/Hawaiian Tropic smell. Mouth-filling, serious, savoury wine. Earnest – trying hard early. Well balanced and very youthful with lots of interest and detail. Good stuff.
Drink 2017-2025”

“Krug's NV Grand Cuvée 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring.”

“Deep, brilliant gold-hued colour. Expressive, stylishly oak-lined, brioche, apple, and honey nose with luscious vanilla and perky spicy complexity. Voluptious and intense the palate is particularly firm and feisty with beautiful vivacity and tight acid line. Elegant, detailed and packed with life.”
